Solskjaer aims for 3rd

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has challenged his Manchester United players to get 15 points from the final six games to secure a top-three finish that will guarantee Champions League football.
By his calculation, that would mean beating either or both Manchester City, who are battling Liverpool to retain their Premier League title, and Chelsea in consecutive home games this month.
Urging his men to collect "as many points as possible" and reap the rewards, he said ahead of today's league game against West Ham: "We want top three. Top four is also an aim... but we should aim for 15 points.
"But now it's about West Ham and focusing on (that).
"If we get 15, we'll be (in the) top three because in those games, hopefully, we'll beat Chelsea."
It may seem a tough ask given that the Red Devils have lost four of their last five games in all competitions, the latest being the 1-0 home loss to Barcelona in the Champions League first leg on Wednesday.
A meeting with mid-table Hammers at Old Trafford represents the perfect opportunity to arrest an alarming slide in form.
Solskjaer pinned the reason for the slump on his team not being "ruthless or clinical enough" in front of goal and revealed it was something they were trying to rectify in training.
He added: "You're never happy when you don't win games, but it's been a period where we've played some good teams. We've been practising. As a striker, I know how important that little belief is so we've been putting balls in the goal.
"Sometimes, you just don't have that little feel, that confidence, so you have to do it in training and hope it comes out again."
But there is little he can do to freshen up his starting XI owing to a rash of injuries and suspensions.
Defenders Luke Shaw and Ashley Young are both banned and Solskjaer revealed that Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian could be in line to fill their full-back spots.
There are big doubts over midfielder Nemanja Matic and forward Alexis Sanchez.
The manager also spoke about the future of Ander Herrera, whose contract expires in the summer. He has been the subject of heavy speculation, with sources saying he has agreed a pre-contract agreement with French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The Spain midfielder, who will not play today after suffering a muscle injury in training, has managed just 134 minutes since picking up a hamstring problem on Feb 24.
Solskjaer hinted that the "future might have been worrying him", thus contributing to his injury woes, adding: "That comes at a time as you say there are contract talks.
"But that's ongoing, I can't really comment too much on how far they are down the line. You have to ask him. I don't know how they've been, the last few talks.
"He's always giving his all, doesn't matter if it's five weeks or five years on his contract."

Football: Brighton to face Man City in FA Cup semi-finals after beating Millwall on penalties, Watford to play Wolves

LONDON (THE GUARDIAN) - Brighton reached their first FA Cup semi-final since 1983 after coming back from the brink to beat Millwall 5-4 on penalties in their quarter-final tie on Sunday (March 18).
Millwall's devastation was immense. The Championship strugglers had led by two goals with two minutes remaining, only for Brighton to force extra time thanks to goals from Jurgen Locadia and Solly March.
The equaliser was gut-wrenching from Millwall's perspective, as goalkeeper David Martin somehow allowed March's harmless free kick drift past him in the fifth minute of added time.
Neil Harris' side could hardly believe their luck and, although they managed to force a shoot-out, their bravery went unrewarded as Jake Cooper blasted the decisive kick over the bar.
The only consolation for Millwall was taking part in one of the games of the season.
The home fans heckled every loose touch from the visitors, howled at every tight refereeing decision and urged their team to demonstrate their impressive giant-killing credentials.
The ear-splitting din acted as a leveller, making the underdogs run faster and tackle harder, and Millwall were quick to test Brighton's nerve.
No wonder Chris Hughton looked concerned on the touchline for much of the first half.
Brighton's timidity in possession invited pressure and Lee Gregory, Millwall's selfless lone forward, went close in the 29th minute, hooking on to the roof of the net.
Brighton crept into the contest as the half wore on, Beram Kayal spurning two decent chances, but Millwall began the second half in a frenzy, almost taking the lead in farcical circumstances.
Mat Ryan's clearance hit Shane Duffy and bounced back towards his own goal, but the Australian managed to gather the loose ball before Gregory could force it into the empty net. Such carelessness only served to encourage Millwall.
Kayal threatened from the edge of the area, drawing a good save from Martin with a measured effort, but Brighton were struggling to tame their impertinent opponents.
They had nobody to slow the tempo in the middle and their task became even more daunting when the wind started to swirl and hail fell from the darkening clouds.
The conditions were not for the faint-hearted, but they posed no problem for Millwall.
The game was just how they wanted it, broken and erratic, and they had chances to break the deadlock, Gregory and Wallace unfortunate to be denied by Ryan after breaking beyond Brighton's creaking back four.
Hughton replaced Alireza Jahanbakhsh with March, but Millwall broke through in the 70th minute when Alex Pearce charged on to a corner from the left and sent a brilliant header into the roof of the net.
Nine minutes later, the Den went wild when Wallace surged clear on the right and fired a low cross into the six-yard box. Aiden O'Brien showed more desire than any of Brighton's defenders and turned the ball past Ryan.
Brighton looked done. They had offered nothing for most of the afternoon.
Yet it was Hughton's substitutes who made the difference. Locadia pulled one back with a venomous shot in the 88th minute and the Millwall's fans howled when the fourth official's board showed four added minutes.
Time was running out when Brighton won one final free kick on the right. Ryan ran forward to join his teammates and he had a good view of a woeful goalkeeping error from Martin, who must have wanted the ground to swallow him whole after allowing March's overhit delivery to slip through his hands and into the right corner.
Harris turned away in astonishment on the touchline, but Millwall's manager could not wallow in self-pity.
He had to work out how to lift his troops for extra time and Millwall pushed at first, James Meredith's fizzing shot drawing an excellent save from Ryan. Mahlon Romeo put the rebound over.
The locals found their voice towards the end of extra time, raising the volume in an effort to get their exhausted team over the line, but there was still time for Shane Ferguson to earn a red card after kicking Lewis Dunk.
There was enough time left for one for piece of controversy when Locadia's goal was ruled out for a tight offside call against Jose Izqueirdo.
The game went to penalties and, when Glenn Murray missed the opening penalty, Millwall were favourites. But Ryan saved one Millwall penalty and then saw Jake Cooper fire over the bar to send Brighton into the hat for the semi-finals alongside Manchester City, Wolves and Watford.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Tottenham 3
Leicester 1
LONDON • Tottenham kept alive their bid to gatecrash the Premier League title race after Davinson Sanchez's first goal for the club and Hugo Lloris' penalty save from Jamie Vardy inspired a 3-1 win over Leicester yesterday.
Christian Eriksen netted moments after the save and, although Vardy got one back, Son Heung-min's late strike ensured third-placed Spurs clinched a fifth win in their last six league games.
They are on 60 points, five off the top as they try to catch Liverpool and Manchester City.
Their gritty success, despite injuries to key players Harry Kane and Dele Alli, was the ideal preparation for hosting Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last 16 first leg on Wednesday.
Said Eriksen: "(Lloris) did save us a few times. Saving the penalty gave us confidence. I saw a stat that we have won the last three games in the last 10 minutes and, even today, we did that." On the title, he added: "Anything is possible."
With the Dortmund clash in mind, Mauricio Pochettino tweaked his team, leaving out Toby Alderweireld and Lucas Moura and recalling Fernando Llorente.
Llorente was caught napping early on when Harry Maguire evaded the striker and met James Maddison's free kick with a towering header that Lloris tipped over.

WE DESERVED MORE
Lot of regrets. It was a game in our hands and we had a lot of chances and created a lot of good moves. We didn't find the good finish. I said to Jamie Vardy he can take the penalty. All the game, we had a lot of chances. But there are regrets after all these chances.
CLAUDE PUEL, Leicester manager, feeling hard done by the defeat.

That chance was symptomatic of a disjointed start from Tottenham.
Harvey Barnes was allowed too much space in the box as he raced onto a pass but wasted a gilt-edged chance with a poor finish.
Spurs, finally piecing together an incisive raid, were furious when Son's penalty appeal ended in a booking for diving after Maguire stuck out a leg to halt the South Korean.
Said Son: "It was a penalty. I was surprised to be given a yellow card. I was disappointed and angry, but we have to take that."
The hosts channelled their frustration into a sustained assault on the goal of Leicester, who have lost four of their last five league games to increase the pressure on under-fire boss Claude Puel.
And they were rewarded with a well-worked 33rd-minute opener.
Kieran Trippier's short corner found the unmarked Eriksen and he whipped a pin-point cross towards Sanchez six yards from goal. Offside protests were in vain as the Colombian launched himself into a diving header that flashed past Kasper Schmeichel.
Replays showed the player was just onside as he scored his first goal since his 2017 move from Ajax.
Leicester's positive start to the second half brought a golden opportunity to equalise with their 60th-minute penalty. A rapid exchange of passes opened up a chance for Maddison, prompting Jan Vertonghen to rashly bundle over the midfielder.
Vardy, the England striker who was surprisingly left on the bench for the first hour, had been warming up in preparation and was immediately introduced, jogging forward to take the ball from Maddison.
But Lloris came to Tottenham's rescue, diving to his right to keep out Vardy's spot kick.
And Tottenham made the most of their escape, with Eriksen's goal three minutes later and Son's breakaway sealing the victory.

Football: Rashford's last-gasp penalty knocks stunned PSG out of Champions League

PARIS (REUTERS) -Marcus Rashford scored a last-gap penalty awarded after a Video Assistant Referee intervention as Manchester United stunned Paris St Germain 3-1 away to reach the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals on Wednesday (March 6).
Never in 106 attempts in Europe's premium club competition had a team progressed in a knockout tie after a 2-0 home defeat but Rashford's stoppage-time penalty sent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side through in the most dramatic fashion.
The visitors, severely depleted by injuries, went ahead twice in the first half through Romelu Lukaku but Juan Bernat equalised for the French champions in between.
PSG were advancing to the last eight 3-2 on aggregate before referee Damir Skomina awarded United a penalty for a Presnel Kimpembe handball after a lengthy delay for the VAR review and Rashford lashed home the spot-kick to level the tie at 3-3 and send United through on away goals.
"I think just keep a cool head there, the type of things you practise every day," Rashford told BT sport.
"I wanted to take it. Doesn't matter now because we got the goal.
"That is probaly the hardest thing, the wait before, but those moments are what you live for."

PSG had only lost two of their last 50 European games at the Parc des Princes.
Solskjaer, who had half his regular starters missing the game through injury or suspension, had said his team needed to score the opening goal to make it happen.
It could not have started better for the visitors, who went ahead after Lukaku intercepted a weak back pass from Thilo Kehrer, rounded Gianluigi Buffon and slid the ball into the empty net.
But PSG dominated possession and the equaliser seemed inevitable, arriving in the 12th minute when Bernat knocked in Kylian Mbappe's cross at the far post to level the match.
The hosts continued to control possession but United took the advantage again with their next chance.
Buffon let a fierce Rashford shot bounce off his chest into the path of Lukaku who poked home the rebound to continue his rich vein of scoring form.
PSG looked nervous throughout the second half and were unable to find a second goal but they looked to have done enough to make the last eight until substitute Diogo Dalot fired in a speculative shot in stoppage-time.
Skomina called for a review after the ball appeared to hit Kimpembe's arm and, after a lengthy wait, he awarded a penalty.
Buffon dived to the right side but Rashford's strike was too powerful for him.
PSG desperately pushed for the goal that would have sent them through in the four minutes remaining as Edinson Cavani replaced Dani Alves, but United held firm and the home players sunk to the ground in disbelief at the final whistle as their fans celebrated an extraordinary victory.

Football: Sevilla put pressure on Spanish La Liga leaders Barcelona by drawing level with 2-0 win over Girona

(REUTERS) - Sevilla overcame a dangerous Girona side to win 2-0 at home in an entertaining game on Sunday (Dec 16), climbing up to second place in La Liga to breathe down the necks of leaders Barcelona.
Girona had made an impressive start against their former coach Pablo Machin's side and La Liga top scorer Cristhian Stuani spurned a great chance to give them the lead.
Yet it was the home side who eventually broke the deadlock early in the second half.
Argentinian playmaker Ever Banega scored from the penalty spot in the 55th minute, after Andre Silva had been brought down, and he was also at the heart of a splendid team move from which Pablo Sarabia stretched Sevilla's lead 10 minutes later.
Girona continued to threaten, and almost got a consolation goal in stoppage time when midfielder Borja Garcia whipped in a shot that looked destined for the top corner but Sevilla goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik managed to tip it away.
Sevilla are second in the standings, locked on 31 points with leaders Barca, who visit Levante later on Sunday as well as third-placed Atletico Madrid, who beat Valladolid 3-2 on Saturday. Real Madrid are two points back in fourth.

Football: Ranieri 'back home' as Roma head coach coach

MILAN (AFP) - Former Roma boss Claudio Ranieri was reappointed head coach of the Serie A club until the end of the season on Friday (March 8), after Eusebio Di Francesco was sacked in the wake of their Champions League exit.
Ranieri, who memorably guided outsiders Leicester City to the 2016 English Premier League title, returns to his hometown club which he coached from September 2009 to February 2011.
The 67-year-old former defender also began his senior playing career with Roma in 1973.
"I'm delighted to be coming back home," Ranieri said.
"When Roma call you, it's impossible to say no."
Former Chelsea boss Ranieri's brief spell as manager of Premier League strugglers Fulham ended last month after only four months in charge.
"We are delighted to welcome Claudio Ranieri back to the club," said AS Roma President Jim Pallotta.
"We have one objective remaining this season and that is to finish in the highest possible league position and secure qualification for the Champions League.
"At this stage of the campaign, it was important to bring in a coach who knows the club, understands the environment, can speak the language and is able to motivate the players.
"Claudio ticks all of those boxes and he's very excited to take on this challenge."
Roma are fifth in Serie A, three points off the Champions League berths for next season.

Ranieri's first match in charge will be an Italian league game at home against Empoli on Monday.
"Claudio's from the city, he's a Roma fan but more than that, he's one of the most experienced coaches in world football," said club legend Francesco Totti, now on the board of directors.

"What we need now is a safe pair of hands to guide us back into the top four and ensure that we are playing Champions League football again next season. We have 12 games left and we need to win as many of them as possible."
Ranieri took over from Luciano Spalletti early in the 2009/10 season with Roma struggling and led them to runners-up finishes in Serie A and the Italian Cup.
He resigned in February of the following season after poor results, with seven coaches having sat on the Roma bench since his departure in 2011.
Former Roma player Di Francesco, 49, paid the price after a chaotic season with last year's Champions League semi-finalists exiting this year's tournament with a last 16, second-leg defeat at Portuguese club Porto.
The club also crashed out of the Italian Cup with a humiliating 7-1 defeat to Fiorentina last month and fell 3-0 to city rivals Lazio last weekend in the Stadio Olimpico.
Di Francesco led Roma to a third-place finish last season but their last Serie A title was in 2001 and most recent trophy the 2008 Italian Cup.
Roma and their sporting director Monchi also parted ways by mutual consent earlier on Friday.
Ranieri's coaching career has included top Italian clubs Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli.
He also coached Spanish clubs Atletico Madrid and Valencia, French outfits Monaco and Nantes and the Greek national team.
His only top-flight league trophy came with Leicester but he was sacked months after their fairytale title success.
He then coached Nantes for a season before taking over at Fulham in November 2018, only to be sacked on Feb 28.
Ranieri also led Fiorentina to the Italian Cup and Italian SuperCup trophies in 1996, after guiding them to the Serie B title in 1994.
He also coached Valencia to the Copa del Rey in 1999 and Uefa Super Cup in 2005.
