Football: Dangerous Yangon can hurt leaders Tampines Rovers in AFC Cup, warns Kadir Yahaya

SINGAPORE - Tampines Rovers could seal passage to the Asean zone semi-finals of the AFC Cup with a win over Yangon United at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday (May 1), but Stags head coach Kadir Yahaya has warned his charges to be wary of their Myanmarese opponents.
Tampines lead Group F with 10 points, three ahead of Vietnam's Ha Noi FC. Cambodian side Nagaworld and Yangon have three points apiece, but Nagaworld are third ahead of Yangon because of a better head-to-head record. Each team have played four matches.
Yangon are all but out of the running for a place for the knock-off stages - they will not win Group F and are unlikely to finish as the best second-placed team among the three Asean groups - which makes them a threat, according to Kadir.
At the pre-game media conference at the Corpthorne King's Hotel on Tuesday, the former Singapore international said: "They have nothing to lose, and so the danger we are facing is that they are playing with no objective.
"They can attack at will, and for us it is important to remain calm, and keep our shape and composure."
The caution that Kadir is showing comes after his team left it till late before beating Nagaworld 4-2 in their last AFC Cup game on April 17. The Stags were expected to rout the visitors, but were held at 1-1 until the dying minutes.
"We expected their (Nagaworld's) fast counter attacks, and there were some lapses in concentration on our part which resulted in them equalising (to make it 1-1)," said Kadir, who added that his team's experienced stars like Khairul Amri and Daniel Bennett would be key against Yangon.
"Credit to the players, they kept fighting and eventually we got the goals and result we wanted."
Tampines are hoping for some respite in the AFC Cup after a poor run in the Singapore Premier League (SPL), where they are winless in their last four games .
Kadir believes that squad rotation - essential when competing in the AFC Cup - affects the team's consistency, and pointed to how Home United also suffered domestically during their run to the Asean zone crown in 2018, and how the Protectors posted stronger results in the SPL after the group stage of the AFC Cup.
Home won just two of their first seven SPL games last term, but then won 10 of their next 17 matches to finish second.
Yangon coach Myo Min Tun said he is expecting a tough night for his charges, especially with first-choice goalkeeper Kyaw Zin Htet (illness) and Guinean striker Sekou Sylla (suspension) out for the game.
"Tampines have many good and skilful individual players, like the two wingers (Ryutaro Megumi and Jordan Webb)," noted the 35-year-old, who scored for Myanmar against Singapore in the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup.
"Tomorrow will be very difficult for us, but we will do our best to challenge and show our level and our team's playing style."

The French goalkeeper has been a hero between the sticks for Spurs, the team with the best defensive record in the division. He believes that Spurs need to believe in order to achieve.

Tottenham not ready to win titles: Pochettino

Tottenham not ready to win titles: Pochettino

LONDON • Mauricio Pochettino has defended his record at Tottenham, arguing that silverware would serve only to "build egos" rather than maintain progress after seeing his team exit a second domestic cup competition in four days.
A Spurs side, sporting seven changes from the League Cup semi-final loss to Chelsea, were knocked out of the FA Cup on Sunday after a 2-0 loss Crystal Palace.
This leaves Pochettino's men with only two fronts to focus on - next month's Champions League last-16 tie against Borussia Dortmund and, realistically, a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Pochettino, who has yet to claim a trophy in his managerial career, admitted disappointment at the meek defeat but suggested trophies would not maintain Spurs' development as a club.
The Argentinian said: "We are going to create a debate that to win a trophy is going to help the club.
"I don't agree with that. In reality, the most important thing is being consistently in the top four and playing in the Champions League.
"That is going to help the club to achieve the last step. The club is doing fantastically well. It's so successful. In the last four or five years, we've been fighting in different ways to achieve what the club needs, to be in the level of Chelsea, (Manchester) United, (Manchester) City, Arsenal or Liverpool.
"People wish we could win some trophies. But we are a team not built to win titles still."
Wounded by fatigue and injuries to key players, Spurs should at least have Son Heung-min, back early after South Korea's surprise elimination from the Asian Cup, available for tomorrow's league game against Watford at Wembley.
Pochettino said: "To be a contender is always difficult for us.
"Now, the realistic targets are trying to be in the top four, to try and be close to City and Liverpool and reduce the gap.
"Another is to try to beat Dortmund and be in the next round.
"That will be tough. We are competing against a team who are doing fantastic in Germany, who are top of the table and have come back off their (winter break) holidays."

With Harry Kane and Dele Alli sidelined until March, everyone was ready to write off Tottenham Hotspur's season as predictions of a slide down the table arrived. Football: Ranieri lined-up as Roma sack Di Francesco after Champions League flop

MILAN (AFP) - Eusebio Di Francesco was sacked as Roma coach after the team crashed out of the Champions League, the Italian club confirmed on Thursday (March 7), with former boss Claudio Ranieri tipped to replace him.
Roma had taken a 2-1 advantage to Porto for the second leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday but fell 4-3 on aggregate after a controversial penalty awarded following a VAR review deep into extra time.
"AS Roma can confirm head coach Eusebio Di Francesco has left the club with immediate effect," the team said in a statement.
"The club would like to thank Eusebio for his work during his time at AS Roma and wish him success in the future."
An urgent meeting had been called on Thursday afternoon in Rome between the club's top officials to discuss Di Francesco's future.
Club president Jim Pallotta later said: "On behalf of myself and everyone at AS Roma, I'd like to thank Eusebio for his work and his commitment.
"Since returning to the club, Eusebio has always acted professionally and put the club's needs ahead of his own. We all wish him well for the future."
Former Sassuolo boss Di Francesco took over in June 2017.

A former Roma midfielder, he had helped the team to their last Serie A title as a player in 2001.
The 49-year-old led Roma to the Champions League semi-finals last season for the first time since 1984, following an epic 3-0 comeback against Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
"Di Francesco will remain the coach who took Roma to the Champions League semi-finals after who knows how many years and he deserves credit for that," said captain Daniele De Rossi.
"I know this isn't our best season and the job of a coach will always be tied to results."
The club finished third last season but this campaign has been marked by struggles with Di Francesco apologising to fans but refusing to resign after a humiliating 7-1 defeat to Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals last month.
Roma are now fifth in Serie A, three points off the Champions League berths for next season, after falling 3-0 last weekend to bitter city rivals Lazio.

RANIERI 'READY'

Ranieri, who memorably guided Leicester City to the 2016 Premier League title before being sacked the following season, coached Roma from September 2009 to February 2011.
The 67-year-old Italian's brief spell as manager of Premier League strugglers Fulham ended last month after only four months in charge.
"Ranieri is ready," wrote Gazzetta Dello Sport, adding that the former Roma boss was expected to travel to the Italian capital from London by Friday at the latest.
Other reported contenders are former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte and his Stamford Bridge successor Maurizio Sarri.
Ranieri has had a long coaching career in Italy with clubs including Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli. He coached French club Nantes before taking over at Fulham in November 2018, only to be sacked on February 28.
During his time in charge of Roma he oversaw 84 matches - winning 47, with 16 draws and 21 defeats.
Di Francesco has coached Roma for 87 games with 46 victories, 18 draws and 23 defeats.
The Champions League exit however was the final straw for American businessman Pallotta who had raged at VAR after the defeat.
The tie hinged on a decision by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir to point to the spot late in extra time upon reviewing an incident in which Alessandro Florenzi hauled back Porto forward Fernando.
Alex Telles converted the spot-kick, and Roma were then denied a penalty at the other end following a review, after Patrik Schick tumbled to the ground.
"Last year we asked for VAR in the Champions League because we got screwed in the semi-final and tonight, they've got VAR and we still get robbed," said Pallotta on Twitter.
"Patrik Schick was clearly clipped in the box, VAR shows it, and nothing is given. I'm tired of this c***. I give up."

Messi calls for search to continue for missing Sala

BARCELONA • Lionel Messi on Friday urged investigators to resume the search for missing striker Emiliano Sala, after police called off rescue operations and admitted the chances of finding him were "extremely remote".
Police from Guernsey abandoned the search on Thursday, after the light aircraft taking the Argentinian to Wales following his signing with Cardiff from Ligue 1 side Nantes disappeared from radar near the British island on Monday.
"While there is the possibility, a shred of hope, we ask that you please #NoDejenDeBuscar (don't stop searching) for Emiliano. All my strength to your family and friends," said the Barcelona striker on Instagram, with the hashtag #PRAYFORSALA.
His plea comes after Sala's father and other players, including Manchester City's Sergio Aguero, begged authorities to continue.
Sala's family have also asked Nantes not to commemorate the 28-year-old at today's French Cup clash with third-tier Entente Sannois Saint-Gratien.
"We ask you to respect the family who absolutely refuse to talk about mourning and ask us to keep believing," Nantes captain Valentin Rongier told more than 300 fans who attended an open training session on Thursday.
"It is for this reason that we are not going to have a minute's silence or a minute's applause because we still have hope."
Sala's sister, Romina, also vowed that she would never stop looking for her brother, before thanking Messi for his support.
She told a press conference in Cardiff on Friday: "He is a fighter. All he wanted was to play football and fulfil his dream. We are not going to stop looking, we are never going to stop."

Rodgers predicts 'special things on the horizon' for Foxes

Rodgers predicts 'special things on the horizon' for Foxes

LONDON • With the Claude Puel cloud lifted, here comes Brendan Rodgers' reign.
Leicester's new manager ran the rule over his charges from the directors' box on Tuesday as they claimed their first home win since Boxing Day, thanks to goals by Demarai Gray and Jamie Vardy.
Rodgers, whose appointment was confirmed just before kick-off, was given a rapturous greeting from the fans and the reception was understandable after the restraint of Puel's 16-month tenure at the King Power Stadium.
While Davy Propper pulled one back, it was not enough for relegation-threatened Brighton as they slumped to a 2-1 Premier League defeat.
However, the night was all about Rodgers, who indicated he would bring the charisma and people skills that Leicester need.
The former Liverpool boss, back in England after three years in Scotland with Celtic, made all the right noises, promising to "give his life to make the supporters proud of their club".
He added: "It feels great, it has obviously come very quickly over the last few days, but I know I'm joining a fantastic club that has grown so quickly over these last few years.
"It's a young squad, a very dynamic squad, it's got huge potential and you've also got some of the players with good experience.
"There were a number of factors in being here and, like I say, I'm absolutely delighted.
"When the opportunity came to talk to Leicester and I was able to analyse it, it allowed me to think that I had probably achieved and taken the club at Celtic maybe as far as I could at this moment."
Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, Leicester's vice-chairman, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to bring a manager of Brendan's calibre to Leicester and I look forward to seeing what he, our talented, young squad and our dedicated, skilled team of staff can achieve together."
First-team coach Mike Stowell, who took charge of the Brighton encounter, told reporters Rodgers had spoken to the players in the dressing room and predicted "there are special things on the horizon".
He said: "He was proud of them and liked the spirit. The atmosphere has lifted with a win and, with the new manager, I'm sure he'll bring a lot of good things and he's got a lot of staff with him. It's exciting times."
One of the new faces will be former Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool defender Kolo Toure, who will join the backroom staff as a first-team coach.
The Ivorian played and worked for the 46-year-old at Anfield and Parkhead, and Rodgers is also expected to raid Celtic for several of their key players.

Football: Son and Llorente strike late as Spurs beat Watford

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur forwards Son Heung-min and Fernando Llorente scored late goals to secure a barely deserved 2-1 win over Watford in the Premier League at a half-empty Wembley Stadium on Wednesday (Jan 30).
Spurs had struggled to shine on a freezing night after going out of the League Cup and FA Cup last week but Son provided a ray of sunshine when he blasted home 10 minutes from time and Llorente got the winner with a trademark header in the 87th.
The win moves Tottenham within two points of second-placed Manchester City and seven ahead of London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea in the battle for a top-four finish.
Watford took the lead when Craig Cathcart got his head to the ball in a crowded penalty area from a corner and bundled it home via a deflection off Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris stranded inside the six-yard box.
Spurs should have been level seven minutes after the break when Llorente managed to put the ball over the bar and spurned another chance in the 64th when he headed wide. Danny Rose and Harry Winks also went close for the hosts.
Just as the home fans were losing faith South Korean Son, who has just returned from the Asian Cup, fired the equaliser and Spaniard Llorente made amends for his earlier misses by heading the winner to delight the fans who braved the cold.
