Arsenal's progress not enough: Emery

Arsenal's progress not enough: Emery
BAKU • Some players may need to leave Arsenal as Unai Emery continues to rebuild the squad, the manager has said after they were thrashed 4-1 by Chelsea in the Europa League final in Azerbaijan.
Second-half goals from Olivier Giroud, Pedro and a double from Eden Hazard ensured that the Gunners - who scored through Alex Iwobi - failed to win their fourth successive European final.
Emery said his team, who finished fifth in the English Premier League, were still very much in a "process" and he would evaluate his options over the summer.
"We need to speak with the club, speak with the players, and do one step more in our way," he said.
"But our idea is to continue... improving with the young players who arrived last year.
"Maybe some players need to leave, to take a new way. We are closer to the other (top) teams but, at the moment, it's not enough.
"Other players will come in and help us get better in our capacity."
The defeat means Arsenal failed to earn a spot in next season's Champions League for the third successive year, but the Spaniard said another Europa League campaign would not put off potential targets joining the club.
"I think Arsenal is a big name in the football world, and a lot of players want to play here," he added.
"The transfers, I don't know for next year. But the club is working to improve and to take all we need to go our way. Also, we have a lot of players with the possibility to improve."
Emery, however, conceded that Chelsea had deserved the victory.
"We tried to stay in the match, but their second goal made it difficult for us," the 47-year-old said.
"It was going better for them and, when we wanted to do something, we couldn't find what we needed to score. They deserved to win."
Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech said he had "no regrets" as he played the final match of his career. The 37-year-old won the Champions League and four Premier League titles at Chelsea and there have been reports linking him with a return to Stamford Bridge in a non-playing capacity.

Football: Sadio Mane scores again as Liverpool beat Fulham to go top

(REUTERS) - Liverpool's livewire Sadio Mane scored one goal and played a crucial part in the other as they reclaimed the Premier League's top spot with a scrappy 2-1 win at second bottom Fulham on Sunday (March 17).
It had looked like being a frustrating day for Juergen Klopp's side after Mane's opener was cancelled out by Ryan Babel following a mistake by Virgil van Dijk, but substitute James Milner slotted home an 81st-minute penalty to take the points.
Liverpool have 76 points from 31 games, two more than champions Manchester City who have a game in hand. Fulham have 17 points and a mountain to climb if they are to avoid almost certain relegation from the top flight.
Mane scored his ninth league goal in as many games when he fired the visitors into a 26th-minute lead with a classy finish which typified Liverpool's attacking mentality under Klopp.
The Senegal forward exchanged a blistering one-two with Roberto Firmino before he buried his shot from eight metres past Fulham keeper Sergio Rico, who then denied Andy Robertson and Van Dijk either side of halftime.
A calamitous Van Dijk error gifted Fulham a 74th-minute equaliser, as his poor header back to keeper Alisson Becker was intercepted by former Liverpool winger Babel who stroked the ball into an empty net.
Another howler, this time by Rico, decided the contest as the keeper spilled a tame Mohamed Salah shot and then hauled down Mane who pounced on the rebound, leaving Milner to stroke home the winner from the spot.

Chelsea collapsed to a 4-0 thrashing at Bournemouth as the Premier League's supposed lesser lights continued to cause mischief at the top end of the table. Liverpool, seeking a first title since 1990, have still increased the gap over City from four points to five but it was night of jitters at a freezing Anfield.

LONDON • Neither Trent Alexander-Arnold nor Andrew Robertson has Lionel Messi's star power, but the buccaneering Liverpool full-backs could play just as vital a role as the Barcelona captain in the first leg of their Champions League semi-finals today.
While Virgil van Dijk has hogged the spotlight after being named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year, his defensive teammates have also emerged as key contributors to a campaign that could end with the double - their first Premier League title ever and a sixth Champions League/European Cup.
The duo have 24 assists between them in all competitions, and they will be pivotal figures in Jurgen Klopp's game plan at the Nou Camp.
Robertson's 11 assists have equalled the league record for a defender and Alexander-Arnold is not far behind, with nine, making them as big of a threat as their "Fab Three" of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.
The pair's friendly rivalry is also spurring them to greater heights.
Ahead of their trip to Barcelona, Scotland captain Robertson said: "I always try and go forward. Sometimes my passes don't find people. But I do try and create. If I get two assists, I expect Trent to get three.
"We all need to chip in with goals and assists. It's not just the front three. It's not just the defence that keeps clean sheets, either. It's a team game."

MORE THAN MESSI
We need to defend in packs, but the problem is that it's not just him. If you keep him quiet, then you've got (Philippe) Coutinho, who we all know well, you've got (Luis) Suarez and people like that who can cause you problems, so it's not about keeping one man quiet, it's about keeping the whole team quiet, and that'll be the hardest thing for us.
ANDREW ROBERTSON, Liverpool left-back, on the prospect of nullifying Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

But Robertson is aware that the ultimate test awaits in Barcelona, where the hosts are unbeaten in 31 Champions League games and - led by talisman Messi - have already scored more than 130 goals in all competitions this term.
The Argentina forward can also boast of an unparalleled record against English clubs, his 24 strikes in 32 Champions League matches is more than any other player. But he has not scored against Liverpool, having played against the Reds twice in the round of 16 in 2007.
Klopp, however, has imbued his players with confidence, with the German telling broadcaster Dazn that the cavernous Nou Camp "is just a stadium" and "not a temple of football".
And Robertson is taking his manager's cue, insisting that while Liverpool will "have our hands full defensively", they will still "attack as a team".
He said: "If me and Trent have time to go forward, we will do it. It's not going to stop us. We know that we can create goals and chances, so why change that?
"But look, we will learn from the game and move from that and see how it pans out. It's a challenge we all look forward to."
Pundits also believe that the Reds will have little fear of Barcelona's ground, despite the hosts yesterday hitting back at Klopp's comments with a Twitter video that declared it to be "our fortress".
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy told the Daily Mail his old team "were better equipped to deal with Lionel Messi than Manchester United were at the Nou Camp".
Also, ex-Reds striker Michael Owen told the Metro that the Spanish champions "will struggle to cope with the pace and power of Mane and Salah midweek".
Regardless of what happens, Klopp best summed up the two-legged tie, promising to be "a fantastic game for all football supporters".

Football: FAS may appoint new national coach in June, Nazri Nasir to take charge of Lions for March tourney

Football: FAS may appoint new national coach in June, Nazri Nasir to take charge of Lions for March tourney

SINGAPORE - The suspense over the identity of the new national football coach will linger for another three months after the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) said on Thursday (March 7) that the recruitment search will drag on until June.
FAS general secretary Yazeen Buhari said: "We are at the tail end of the process. And we should be appointing one (the new national coach) before the next competition window (official Fifa match dates) in June."
The Lions have been without a coach since exiting the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup in the group stage in December last year. Then, FAS' head of youth Fandi Ahmad led the team for six months.
Tatsuma Yoshida, a 44-year-old Japanese and former S-League player with Jurong FC and an ex-coach of Japanese J-League club Kashiwa Reysol and Albirex Niigata, has been mentioned as a possible front runner for the hot seat.
On Thursday, it was announced that Singapore will take part in the AirMarine Cup held in Kuala Lumpur's Bukit Jalil Stadium on March 20 and 23.
For this assignment, ex-Lions captain Nazri Nasir will lead the squad. The other teams involved in the quadrangular are hosts Malaysia, Afghanistan and Oman.
The Lions will meet the Tigers of Malaysia in a Causeway battle on March 20 while Oman play Afghanistan on the same day. The winners of the opening games will proceed to play in the final three days later while the losers will contest the third-placing match, also to be played on March 23.
FAS vice-president Teo Hock Seng, who will be the head of the delegation for the AirMarine Cup, added: "This is a great opportunity for Singapore football. Malaysia did pretty well in the recent Suzuki Cup (they lost 3-2 on aggregate to Vietnam in the two-legged fFinal), but I don't think we are too far away from them.
"I will be going up (as the head of delegation) to ensure that we will play to win."
Calling the appointment "a privilege and honour", Nazri, 48, said: "This (the game against Malaysia) needs no introduction.
"It will be do-or-die, there are no friendlies against Malaysia. I expect them (the Lions) to do their best. We are all ready to go."
Picking a squad of 22, Nazri decided to go for a youthful line-up and decided not to call up 35-year-old veterans Shahril Ishak (138 caps) and Baihakki Khaizan (134 caps) although he did not rule them out for future selection. Veteran goalkeeper Hassan Sunny, 34, is currently injured.
"Bai and Shahril had done a lot for the country over the years," Nazri explained.
"They had also done their part in the Suzuki Cup supporting and guiding the younger players. But now is the time to select more younger players."
Also missing is Home United forward Adam Swandi, the reigning Singapore Premier League Young Player of the Year. Although he was tearing defences apart with his trickery for former club Albirex Niigata last year, the 23-year-old has made a quiet start with the Protectors.
Nazri noted: "I look at players based on performance and current form and the style that we want to play, it is good for him (Adam) to take a break."
And the former midfield hard man has a clear vision of the football he wants the Lions to dish out.
"I am looking at a very attacking team," he added. "We want players who have pace, aggression and are explosive. I want to see midfielders coming into the box, taking on players and shooting from outside the box."

Football: Napoli stumble at Fiorentina and trail Juventus by 8pts, Martinez gets Inter back to winning ways

MILAN (AFP) - Napoli could finish the weekend trailing Italian Serie A leaders Juventus by 11 points, after Carlo Ancelotti's wasteful side stuttered to a 0-0 draw at Fiorentina on Saturday (Feb 9).
Fiorentina goalkeeper Alban Lafont produced a string of saves to deny Piotr Zielinski and Dries Mertens as Napoli failed to score away from home for the third game running.
"We dropped two points that we would've deserved for attacking from start to finish," Ancelotti told Sky Sport Italia.
"In some ways, it was an impeccable performance, but we weren't clinical enough in front of goal and were forced to make do with a point."
Hosts Fiorentina drew for the 11th time in 23 matches this season. Their best chance came just after half-time when French midfielder Jordan Veretout was denied by an excellent stop from Alex Meret.
Inter Milan, in third, got back to winning ways with Argentine Lautaro Martinez coming off the bench late and scoring the only goal after 79 minutes in a 1-0 victory at Parma.
Radja Nainggolan set up the Argentinian to give Luciano Spalletti's side their first goal and league win of 2019.
Inter are now nine points behind Napoli (52 points), with Roma in fourth and Lazio fifth (both have 38 points) after their wins over Chievo and Empoli earlier this week.
Unbeaten Juventus could stretch their advantage to double digits on Sunday when they travel to mid-table Sassuolo.

City want to co-own team in Malaysia

City want to co-own team in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR • The owners of Premier League champions Manchester City are eyeing a stake in a Malaysian team to add to their portfolio of clubs, a Malaysian sports official revealed yesterday.
Ferran Soriano, chief executive officer of the City Football Group (CFG), bankrolled by Sheikh Mansour of the Abu Dhabi royal family, raised the possibility when he met Sports Minister Syed Saddiq in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.
CFG already own or have stakes in Major League Soccer outfit New York City, A-League team Melbourne City, J-League side Yokohama F Marinos, Uruguay's Atletico Torque, recently-relegated Spanish team Girona and Chinese side Sichuan Jiuniu, as well as City, who are fresh off winning an unprecedented domestic treble in England.
Ahmad Shapawi Ismai, the director-general of Malaysia's national sports council, revealed to Agence France-Presse that he was "delighted and excited" at the news that CFG "are looking at the possibility of co-owning a Malaysian club as we need (their) expertise".
While Soriano did not reveal the club that the group was interested in buying, Mr Syed said CFG would be meeting some presidents of local clubs soon, and he wanted them to make Malaysia "their base in South-east Asia".
At the meeting, the Spaniard claimed he saw great possibilities in the country, adding: "We see Malaysia has an opportunity for football... the level of enthusiasm of the fans is obvious. The development of Malaysian football and the league in the last year with investment by the government shows there's great opportunity."
Malaysia is the latest Asian country being considered by CFG - in March, Soriano expressed interest in investing in a club from India.
