Football: Girona knock Atletico out of Copa del Rey in six-goal thriller

MADRID (REUTERS) - Atletico Madrid crashed out of the Copa del Rey to Girona on Wednesday (Jan 16) following a highly entertaining 3-3 draw at home to the Catalan side, who sneaked through to the quarter-finals on away goals after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.
Atletico substitute Antoine Griezmann looked to have completed a late turnaround for Diego Simeone's side, who were trailing 2-1 in the second half, when he put the hosts 3-2 up in the 84th minute.
Yet Girona forward Seydou Doumbia delivered a final twist in the saga by scoring at the other end four minutes later.
Croatian forward Nikola Kalinic had fired Atletico into an early lead but the packed Wanda Metropolitano stadium was stunned into silence by a jaw-dropping volley from Girona winger Valery Fernandez in the 36th minute.
Atletico, already missing several first-team regulars to injury, lost Spain midfielder Saul Niguez to a muscle problem early in the second half.
They suffered another setback soon after when Cristhian Stuani headed Girona in front following a free kick, sparking furious but futile protests from Atletico who claimed the Uruguayan had fouled their captain Diego Godin.
Griezmann came off the bench on the hour mark and soon threaded a pass towards Kalinic which Argentine winger Angel Correa squeezed under Girona's goalkeeper to equalise.
Godin then hit the crossbar and Santiago Arias had a goal ruled out for offside as Atletico chased a winner.
France forward Griezmann prompted wild celebrations when he smashed into the roof of the net, but the mood was soon punctured by Doumbia, also a substitute, who poked home a shot from Borja Garcia to send Girona through and dump out Atletico, who have not won the Copa del Rey since 2013.

Players nabbed in Spain fixing probe

MADRID ̢ۢ Spanish police yesterday arrested several footballers, former players and club executives as part of a match-fixing investigation.
Daily El Pais revealed former player Raul Bravo, who played for Real Madrid and was an ex-Spain international; Borja Fernandez, who retired earlier this month following the end of Valladolid's LaLiga season; and ex-Sevilla player Carlos Aranda were among those caught in the raid.
Others snared include Samuel Saiz, who had been on a season-long loan to Getafe from English Championship side Leeds, and Agustin Lasaosa, the president of recently relegated Huesca.
Juan Carlos Galindo Lanuza, the club's chief of medical staff, was also taken in, with police saying the arrested Huesca officials "are suspected of having taken part in match-fixing when they were in the second division".
According to a police source, the suspects are all accused of belonging to a criminal gang, corruption and money laundering.
Pedro Camarero, a lawyer acting for Huesca, told reporters various people at the club had been detained on a warrant.
He said: "We haven't been able to speak to the president yet. However, he will be able to give opportune explanations in due course.
"Internally within the club, we are not worried and are at the disposal of whatever the courts request of us. For now, we do not know how things will develop."
LaLiga president Javier Tebas, himself a former Huesca president, told daily Marca that the operation had originated from a complaint made by Spain's top flight and the investigation had been over a year in the making.
The Spaniard said: "It really hurts, because it affects a club I love, but the most important thing is to end corruption in football."
The Spanish league also issued a statement, saying: "We want to thank the National Police for the extraordinary work done to dismantle what appears to be an organised criminal group dedicated to obtaining economic benefits through the predetermination of matches."
Spanish media have reported LaLiga and LaLiga 2 matches in the recently-concluded season and previous one were allegedly fixed, and the probe had been triggered following Huesca's 1-0 loss to Nastic on May 27 last year, with "irregular betting patterns" over the half-time and full-time scores spotted.
The Daily Mail also reported an influx of bets coming from Ukraine and Asia had aroused suspicions in the match, with Huesca having sealed promotion to LaLiga, while Nastic were fighting to stay up.
Match-fixing has been a constant issue in Spanish football. In February last year, at least 24 people were arrested for allegedly rigging games in the lower leagues.

Football: Spurs going for victory at Dortmund, says Pochettino

DORTMUND, GERMANY (REUTERS) – Tottenham Hotspur must forget their commanding 3-0 Champions League last 16 first-leg advantage over Borussia Dortmund and must play to beat the Germans again on Tuesday (March 5), coach Mauricio Pochettino has said.
Spurs took their chances to build a big lead at Wembley last month but both sides have since struggled for form, with the Londoners having lost twice and drawn in the Premier League, while Bundesliga leaders Dortmund have drawn, won and lost.
Despite their first-leg advantage, Pochettino warned against complacency and said he wanted his team to play for another win, although they have had one day less to prepare than the Germans.
â€Å“We all agree that first of all we need to perform tomorrow. It is going to be tough, we need to forget the first leg, that must be our approach,” he told a news conference on Monday.
â€Å“I think we need to play like always, try to win. We cannot think about the first leg. It’s so important to start the game at a good level and be aggressive. That is key.”
Spurs must wait to see if Eric Dier, who has not played since early February due to tonsillitis, and fellow England midfielder Harry Winks, recovering from a hip injury, will be fit to play after the pair travelled with the squad.
â€Å“We need to assess both. They are here because we still need one day more to assess if they can (play),” Pochettino said. â€Å“Dier has been out for a while and may be on the bench. Winks we need to see tomorrow.”
Pochettino also expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that Dortmund had an extra 24 hours to rest for the game after their 2-1 defeat at Augbsurg in the Bundesliga on Friday.  Spurs, who are third in the Premier League, were in action on Saturday when they drew 1-1 at home to Arsenal.
â€Å“It’s strange for me that no-one has said anything about that. The first leg was the same. It’s impossible, how important is the game, that one team has 24 hours more to prepare. It’s massive,” he said.
â€Å“We need help from the (English) FA, we need help from the Premier League. I don’t know whose fault it is. I don’t know whether it is the FA, the Premier League, the club or the TV (who) wanted the matches to be on those days.”Â

Veterans can steer PSG to Champions League title: Alves

Veterans can steer PSG to Champions League title: Alves

PARIS ̢ۢ Dani Alves jokes that Paris Saint-Germain are still Champions League "virgins", but the presence of players like the decorated Brazil defender only helps to make them more credible contenders to win their maiden European Cup.
In a glittering career, he has won the Champions League three times with Barcelona, while reaching another final with Juventus.
Alves is a veteran now, his 36th birthday falling several weeks before this season's final, but he is conscious of what players like him and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, 41, can add to a PSG squad comprising football's two most expensive players in Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
"We know how to win and how to lose. What we try to transmit to the others is that either we all go together in the same direction, or we leave the doors open to a defeat," Alves told Agence France-Presse.
He was speaking ahead of the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at home to Manchester United today.
The mood is relaxed and confidence is high at the Parc des Princes as Thomas Tuchel's players seek to build on their 2-0 first-leg win last month, achieved without Neymar and Edinson Cavani.
While the former has been ruled out through injury and the latter might be fit to make only the bench, Alves believes PSG have proven they can cope with their absences.
"This is not a competition that depends on only one player having a spectacular day," he said.
"When you have experienced players, you don't tremble when it comes to playing in a hostile atmosphere, or under pressure."
In his debut campaign for the club last season, PSG were knocked out at this stage by Real Madrid, the first time Alves had not been involved in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in a decade.
It was a disappointment for the French champions and their Qatari owners, and talk had been rife over a divided dressing room, but Alves insisted there is an "incredible atmosphere" under Tuchel.
He said: "We are lucky this year to have a management team that is liked, respected by everyone. Everything has been put in place to make this a great year for us."
But, while PSG do not want to just get past United - they want to go beyond the last eight, something they have not managed since the Qatari takeover in 2011 - they are still haunted by the ghosts of their collapse at the Nou Camp two years ago despite winning the first leg 4-0.
Reflecting on that humiliation when they lost 6-1 to Barcelona in the second leg, Tuchel said: "It's not good to play with fear, but it's not good to play with too much confidence either.
"We have guys who played in Barcelona, who have that experience. We can't control the result, you never can in football, but we can control our performance."

MONACO ̢ۢ Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze is confident that his German side can go far in the Champions League after they qualified for the last 16 as Group A winners with a 2-0 win over Thierry Henry's Monaco on Tuesday.
Portugal midfielder Raphael Guerreiro scored twice to claim all three points for the visitors as they snatched top spot from Atletico Madrid - who could only draw 0-0 at Club Brugge - with a superior head-to-head record.
"With all the possession we had, you'd have to say we deserved the win in the end," Gotze said on the club's official website.
"Winning the group makes it that bit sweeter. We were saying before the match that we felt Atletico might draw 0-0. Fortunately, this turned out to be the case.
"The situation is really positive. As long as we work hard as a team, both in defence and in attack, we're going to have a lot of success."
Meanwhile, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo stole the limelight before their match when he appeared to let slip a sexist remark, telling a female reporter he did not wish to discuss money with a woman.
Cristina Garcia Tirado of Spanish television station Cuatro had asked if the club had enough money to offer a new contract to veteran defender Diego Godin.
"To be sincere, I don't like to speak about money because it is uncouth, and even less so with a woman," Cerezo said in response to her question.
Garcia herself played down the comment, saying Cerezo was "a great person and a gentleman" and had always been respectful to her and other women.
"It was an unfortunate moment from the president but, normally, he is very respectful towards me. I think it was a lapse and he didn't think about his answer. He has always treated me kindly," she said.
"It's true that sometimes he says things and makes jokes without thinking about the consequences, but he does not want to cause any harm."
Last week, French DJ Martin Solveig was widely criticised for asking Lyon forward Ada Hegerberg, when she came on stage to receive the inaugural Ballon d'Or award for the best player in women's football, whether she could "twerk".
In Istanbul, Group D winners Porto struggled to a 3-2 away victory over Galatasaray but, despite the loss, the Turkish side finished third and secured a spot in the Europa League's round of 32.
Lokomotiv Moscow had needed a win against already-qualified Schalke to have any hope of snatching third place away from Galatasaray, but they fell to a stoppage-time goal from Alessandro Schoepf and finished bottom after the 1-0 defeat.

Football: Choupo-Moting in goal-line howler as PSG throw away chance to wrap up French title

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain squandered the chance to clinch the French Ligue 1 title in record-equalling time on Sunday (April 7) after a 2-2 draw at home to Strasbourg, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's incredible miss from on the goal line costing his team dear.
PSG were handed the opportunity to win their sixth French crown in seven seasons after second-placed Lille drew 1-1 at Reims earlier.
That left Thomas Tuchel's side knowing that three points at the Parc des Princes would see them retain the title and wrap it up with eight games to spare, matching the speed with which Laurent Blanc's team became champions in 2016.
Choupo-Moting gave them an early lead with his third Ligue 1 goal, but later in the first half he somehow succeeded in turning a net-bound Christopher Nkunku shot onto the post while standing on the line.
"I wondered if I was offside and it all happened very fast. I touched the ball, it hit the post and, well, it's a real shame because the ball was going in," he told Canal+. "Sorry about that."
Fresh from winning the League Cup last weekend, Strasbourg had equalised before Choupo-Moting's howler, when Nuno da Costa turned in a Lionel Carole cross, and they found themselves 2-1 up in the 38th minute when Anthony Goncalves lashed home from 22 yards.
Kylian Mbappe came off the bench on the hour mark but it was another PSG substitute who made it 2-2 with eight minutes remaining. Julian Draxler sent in a corner from the right and Germany defender Thilo Kehrer headed home.
However, having drawn at home to PSG back in December, mid-table Strasbourg then held on for a point.
Cameroon international Choupo-Moting started with Mbappe rested and Neymar, Angel di Maria and Edinson Cavani all unfit - the latter watched from the stands sporting a beret.

'Murphy's law'

"He is an excellent back-up player to have but if you start a lot for PSG you need to have confidence and he lacks that," said Tuchel of Choupo-Moting.
"He was very unfortunate because he started very well and then he stopped that ball on the line which would have made it 2-1 for us.
"I don't know why he did that. In English you say it's Murphy's law."
Still a huge 20 points clear at the summit and with a game in hand, PSG will now hope to secure the eighth league title in their history when they go to Lille next weekend.
A point will be enough in that game, but PSG should have finished the job here - Choupo-Moting's miss was one of the worst you are ever likely to see, while Dani Alves hit the bar after the break.
Earlier, Jose Fonte's 56th-minute header had Lille on course to take all three points away to Reims, but substitute Remi Oudin's 78th-minute leveller - initially ruled out for offside but then given after a Video Assistant Referee review - denied the visitors.
Lille are more concerned with holding off the teams below them as they look to secure second place, which provides automatic qualification for next season's Champions League group stage.
The draw at the Stade Auguste-Delaune moved them five points clear of third-placed Lyon, who slumped to a shock 3-1 loss at home to relegation-threatened Dijon on Saturday.
"If we had won I think we would have sealed our place on the podium," said Lille coach Christophe Galtier.
"We are 11 points ahead of Saint-Etienne but there are still 21 points to play for."
Fourth-placed Saint-Etienne drew 2-2 at Amiens on Saturday, while Marseille, in fifth spot, were beaten 2-0 at Bordeaux on Friday.
Reims are just a point behind Marseille in sixth and are level on points with Patrick Vieira's Nice, who beat Montpellier 1-0.

Emery urges fired-up Gunners to keep cool heads
LONDON ̢ۢ Unai Emery has called on his players to "control their emotions" with Arsenal staring at a Europa League exit at the last-16 stage unless they can overturn a 3-1 deficit against Rennes in the second leg today.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos' sending-off proved costly in France as the Gunners leaked three goals after the defender's dismissal.
Their attack was also blunted owing to the suspension of Alexandre Lacazette, who was red-carded in the first leg of their last-32 tie with Bate Borisov.
But Arsenal got a big boost on Tuesday after Uefa reduced his ban to two games from three on appeal, meaning he will be free to feature at the Emirates.
While Emery is expected to field an attacking line-up, he does not want his side to lose their heads, especially if the French Ligue 1 outfit put 10 men behind the ball.
The Spaniard said: "We know that for example on Thursday one match can change a lot with one red card or goal, so controlling is very important."
His counterpart Julien Stephan feels packing his defence will only play into Arsenal's hands, with the hosts on an 11-game winning run at home in the Premier League and Europe since December.
Admitting the tie was far from done and Rennes "need to score there, at least once, if not twice", he said: "Arsenal remain favourites given their past and their experience."
In the other ties, Chelsea seem set to cruise into the quarter-finals after taking a 3-0 first-leg lead over Dynamo Kiev.

The Gunners snared Lacazette from Lyon in the summer of 2017 for a then club-record fee of £46.5 million. It has now been revealed that Emery was a rival suitor before Paris Saint Germain turned their attention to Kylian Mbappe; a player that Arsene Wenger had also attempted to sign.

The time off comes before Emery starts to prepare his charges for the Europa League final against Chelsea at the end of this month in Baku, Azerbaijan. A victory will mean the Gunners can claim a Champions League berth for the upcoming season and in terms of silverware it means it will be a profitable season for the Emirates Stadium outfit.
