Rodgers closing in on EPL return with Leicester

LONDON â€¢ Brendan Rodgers will soon make his return to managing in the Premier League, as Celtic "very reluctantly" granted him permission to talk to Leicester City.
The 46-year-old Northern Irishman, who has not coached a Premier League team since being sacked by Liverpool in October 2015, is in talks about filling the vacancy left by Claude Puel, who was sacked last Sunday.
Rodgers, who came agonisingly close to landing an elusive Premier League title for Liverpool in the 2013-14 season, has rebuilt his reputation in Scotland, guiding Celtic to a historic double treble in two seasons and are on course for a third one this term.
However, not even the lure of that - and getting the better of Rangers manager Steven Gerrard who played under him at Liverpool - has been enough to deter him from meeting the Leicester hierarchy.
"Celtic Football Club today confirmed that it has been approached by Leicester City to speak to Brendan Rodgers with regard to their current managerial vacancy," read a Celtic statement.
"Brendan has indicated to the club that this is an opportunity he wishes to investigate further and therefore, very reluctantly, the club has granted him permission to speak to Leicester."
Prior to Liverpool, Rodgers was in charge at Swansea, where he introduced a brand of possession-based play inspired by his interest in Spanish football.
Since arriving at Parkhead in 2016, Rodgers has won two league titles, three Scottish League Cups and two Scottish Cups.

LONDON (AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE) - Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Andre Onana says that the flamboyant European dreamers aren't afraid of anyone as they prepare to continue their wild ride in the Champions League with the first leg of their semi-final at Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday (April 30).
Four-time European champions Ajax are hunting their first major continental triumph since Patrick Kluivert downed AC Milan in the 1995 final and have warmed hearts with a thrilling run to the last four that has recalled the glory days of Johan Cruyff and total football.
Next up are Spurs, who Ajax meet after dispatching reigning European champions Real Madrid and Juventus - tipped by many to win the Champions League this season after signing Cristiano Ronaldo - with thrilling displays that enchanted football fans across the continent.
"After beating Juventus and Real Madrid, you're not afraid of anyone," Onana said in an interview with Agence France-Presse.
"They (Spurs) are a very good team. They have very good players, especially on the counter where they can create problems for us. But it's up to us to handle these situations."
Cameroon international Onana has been a fixture between the sticks as the Dutch giants hunt a historic treble that Ajax have not completed since Cruyff's 1972 heyday, when they won the second of three consecutive European Cups and combined that with the Dutch Cup and league title.
They are also top of the Eredivisie, although level on points with PSV Eindhoven, and take on Willem II in May's domestic cup final.

Asked by AFP if he expected Ajax to go so far in Europe, Onana said: "To be honest, no! It's my first season in the Champions League and, when we qualified for the group stage, it was already like 'wow'."
Ajax's continental campaign kicked off against Austrian side Sturm Graz way back in July, the first of three qualifying rounds they had to negotiate before making the groups.
"We said to ourselves, there are six matches, let's see if we can hang on to the Europa League!"
Instead, Ajax finished comfortably second in Group E, unbeaten and only two points behind eventual group winners Bayern Munich, and now have a realistic chance of joining the Bavarians on five European Cups after turning on the style in the knockout rounds.
"It's the philosophy of the club and it's important for us to stay true to it: control the game, keep possession... it's clear that fans have been enjoying watching it, and we have fun playing it," said Onana.
Ajax have extra motivation going into their clash at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as they know that this is the last chance for this group of players to shock everyone and snatch the biggest prize in football.
Star midfielder Frenkie de Jong will leave for Barcelona in the summer for an initial â‚¬75 million (S$114 million), while centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, who sent Juventus packing with a bullet header in the quarter finals, could follow his teammate to Catalonia.
After knocking out Real, coach Frank de Boer admitted that forwards Hakim Ziyech and David Neres and Onana would also all be targeted by Europe's biggest clubs come the end of the season.
And the stopper wants to sign off this era with the perfect parting gift after missing out on the Europa League to Manchester United in 2017.
"It's clear that this is our objective. Not just for the goal in and of itself, but for us, because after this season, there will be a lot of players who will leave," said Onana.
"It is important for us to do something big. If that means winning the treble, well that will be simply beautiful."

The Dutch failed to qualify for last year's World Cup in Russia, having earlier missed out on Euro 2016 . But they brushed aside Germany and world champions France in the Nations League group stage to qualify for the semi-finals in Portugal.
The Netherlands' resurgence as a force in Europe has been helped by a new generation of talent and the emergence of players such as Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt, who Koeman says can shape Dutch football for years to come.
"We have a great future," Koeman told The Guardian. "In the last few years it is the best generation. But they are just starting. They have great talent.
"We always brought good young players through the system from what we have in Holland. We are a country that will always produce good young players. Always.
"Sometimes in football it's like this: talented young players coming through the system. The atmosphere around the national team has changed and that was down to the players and how we started in the Nations League."
De Jong and de Ligt were part of the Ajax Amsterdam side that reached this season's Champions League semi-finals and Koeman said de Ligt's partnership with Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk in defence had given the Dutch a strong foundation.
"We have the best centre defenders with de Ligt and Virgil," the 56-year-old added. "They are top defence players. That's great because you build the house, always, from downstairs. You don't start with the roof.
"We are on a good way back to where we would like to stay as a country."
The Netherlands face England in the second Nations League semi-final on Thursday (June 6), a day after hosts Portugal play Switzerland in the first semi-final. The final and third-place playoff are on June 9.

BAKU â€¢ Eden Hazard helped make it a night to celebrate for Chelsea in Baku, but the Belgian's confirmation that it was almost certainly his last game for the club opened the way to a summer of uncertainty at Stamford Bridge.
Hazard scored twice, including a penalty, and set up another goal for Pedro Rodriguez after Olivier Giroud had set Chelsea on their way to an emphatic 4-1 win over London rivals Arsenal in the Europa League final in Azerbaijan on Wednesday.
Maurizio Sarri's side will be back in the Champions League next season, by which time Hazard looks set to be wearing a Real Madrid shirt.
"I have made my decision already and now I'm waiting on both clubs. I think it is a goodbye but, in football, you never know," the forward told BT Sport after the game.
The 28-year-old has long been linked with Real and all signs point towards a transfer that could be worth â‚¬100 million (S$153.7 million).
"My dream was to play in the Premier League and I have done that, so maybe now it is the time for a new challenge," added Hazard, who has won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and a League Cup as well as a second Europa League trophy in his seven-year spell with the Blues.
Chelsea have known this moment was coming, but it is a huge concern for a club who are facing a Fifa-imposed ban on signing players in the next two transfer windows.
Sarri can celebrate, for now. This was the Chelsea manager's first major trophy in management at the age of 60, at the end of a season in which he also steered Chelsea to third place in the league, but it remains to be seen if the Italian will stick around for a second season.

He has struggled to win over supporters and has been strongly linked with a move to Juventus.
"I have to speak to my club tomorrow," he admitted. "We need to know what the club can do for me, what I can do better for the club. Then we will decide. I love the Premier League, so I am happy."

Should Sarri also leave, Chelsea will probably not miss him as much as they will miss Hazard.
There have been times during the season when the Belgian appeared to be going through the motions, as if his heart and mind were already in Spain, but his contribution over the final months has been immense.
In a team that looked low on confidence, struggling to adapt to Sarri's methods, he was so often the creative inspiration, scoring 21 goals and providing 17 assists.
It seemed to come to him so naturally on Wednesday night. This was Hazard playing his own game, not trying to overcompensate as players sometimes do when their ego tells them that this is their stage.
Those little shimmies, the change of pace, that little roulette turn in the first half and the way he drifted away from Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka in the second.
The downside in Baku was that there were not many fans to celebrate his genius - thousands of empty seats contributed to a muted atmosphere.
Many Chelsea and Arsenal fans, probably half their 12,000 combined allocation, stayed away, unable to afford the money or time to make the expensive and inaccessible 9,000km round trip.
For those who made it, they arrived only to realise that the pitch was a fair distance away from the stands.
"You travel all that way to watch a European final and, when you sit in your seat, you're not much closer to the pitch than when you left home," tweeted BT Sports pundit Gary Lineker.
For the fans who tuned in to the live broadcast from home, they were also at times treated to camera angles that were so high that player numbers could not be seen.
But, for all the controversies, the night deservedly was Chelsea's.
No other team have gone through an Europa League campaign this century without losing a game and they did that despite all the doubts surrounding their management and associated issues on and off the pitch.

LONDON â€¢ Mauricio Pochettino is shocked at receiving a two-game touchline ban and a Â£10,000 (S$17,800) fine for his conduct following the 2-1 Premier League defeat at Burnley last month.
The Tottenham manager confronted referee Mike Dean after the game and will consequently watch their next two matches from the directors' boxes - at his former club Southampton today and Liverpool on March 31.
He outlined his disappointment at the sanction, of which he was informed on Tuesday, and will assess the Football Association's written explanation before deciding whether to appeal.
"I am a little bit in shock because I think it's completely unfair," he said. "But what can I do now? Nothing. We still don't know the reasons because the letter (of explanation) still hasn't arrived.
"Of course it wasn't the best way to complain or talk with the referee, but I never expected this type of situation. That, for me, is not fair. I need to see the reasons why, and then we'll see what happens."
The Argentinian said his punishment for a first major offence since arriving in England six years ago does not reflect the attitude he has shown in that time.
"It's my seventh season in England and you can see my behaviour from day one, talking in public and private," he added.
"I was a coach, a manager, a person who wanted to help the Premier League and the FA; someone who tried to understand and behave my best to help the referees.
"It's my first time here that I'm maybe not completely right in my behaviour, but I feel this is too much."
Assistant manager Jesus Perez, first-team coach Miguel D'Agostino and goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez will be directing from the touchline today, with Pochettino communicating by walkie-talkie.
On a more positive note, Dele Alli could return today after recovering from a hamstring injury.
Kieran Trippier is likely to miss out with a gluteal muscle strain, while Harry Winks is struggling with the groin complaint that cut short his involvement in the 1-0 midweek win at Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.
Asked about Ralph Hasenhuttl's progress since he was appointed as Saints boss in December, Pochettino said: "My wish is for Southampton to finish in a very good way. He is doing a very good job.
"Of course I want to beat them but I wish them all the best."
His team are winless in their last three league games, having drawn with Arsenal after successive defeats at Burnley and Chelsea.
They are three points ahead of fourth-placed Manchester United (58 points), with Arsenal (57) and Chelsea (56) close behind.
The Saints, on 27 points, are two better off than 18th-placed Cardiff in the fight against relegation.

While Ronaldo had carried on where he left off, plundering 19 goals in Serie A, his domestic form as the second-highest scorer in the Italian league had not translated to the European stage, with only one strike this term before the Allianz Stadium meeting.

The Spanish press joined in the chorus of lamentation, with Marca questioning why Real "gave away a legend".
It added: "We just saw that Ronaldo is priceless. Letting him go was a historic error, he was worth a billion.
"Madrid should never have let a player like this escape, when he had a contract, and was one of the patrons of the four Champions League wins."
