Football: Cardiff hang on for valuable point at Palace

LONDON (REUTERS)- Lowly Cardiff City survived intense pressure from Crystal Palace to pick up just their second away point of the season with a goalless draw at Selhurst Park on Wednesday (Dec 26).
Palace went into the game on a high after their surprise 3-2 win at champions Manchester City but their luck was out against Neil Warnock's battling side.
Andros Townsend hit the bar in the opening minute from a promising position after good work from Wilfried Zaha and Cheikhou Kouyate.
Luka Milivojevic struck the post with a 77th-minute free kick for Palace, who had 31 shots but only five on target against the Welsh side.
The result left Cardiff one place above the relegation zone in 17th place while Roy Hodgson's Palace are 14th.
"It was very frustrating, not to put at least one of the chances away. If we want to start climbing the table we have to be clinical like we were last week," said Townsend, who scored a stunning volley in Saturday's win at the Etihad.
"Initially, you thought it was going to be one of those days, but with the amount of chances we were creating we always knew we'd get another one. We did but we couldn't put it in.
"In the past we've had problems following up good performance with another, and we did do well today, but we just couldn't put the ball away," he said.
Warnock, whose team suffered a 5-1 home loss to Manchester United in their last outing, denied that his team had taken a negative approach to the game.
"We didn't try to shut the shop up, towards the end we were trying to get a winner.
"We tried to limit them and we did. We stayed strong and on another day we could have got all three points," he said.

LONDON • Tottenham Hotspur believe they are on the brink of a piece of modern-day history and it has certainly been difficult to keep a lid on the excitement that is building ahead of the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Manchester City on Wednesday.
As such, yesterday's visit of an already relegated Huddersfield team felt like a distraction, an irritation even.
It added up to a test of Spurs' mentality, which Mauricio Pochettino has had cause to criticise on a few occasions this season, with the points still imperative to the club's top-four aspirations.
However, he could rest easy here. The 4-0 Premier League home victory was never in doubt from the moment Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama sashayed through Huddersfield's backline to grab the opener - his first of the season.
And the win which put Spurs third was glossed by a clinical hat-trick from Brazilian forward Lucas Moura - his first in a Spurs shirt.
Pochettino's decision to rest the majority of his regulars ahead of the City reverse fixture, with his side leading 1-0, was vindicated.

Tottenham have won all five league games Harry Kane has not played in.

Only Christian Eriksen from the likely attackers for the upcoming Etihad meeting started.
But, despite the injured pair of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Spurs were in cruise control en route to their third consecutive win and clean sheet at their new stadium.
The team sheet was always going to be a prominent subplot and it was not just that of Spurs that registered with a degree of force.
Huddersfield's stay in the top flight has proved short-lived and, it appears that the club will use their remaining four league games to test out players for the Championship - and overlook those who could fetch a transfer fee in the summer.
While Spurs' strength in depth has at times been questioned, Pochettino, unlike his counterpart Jan Siewert, could call up players of proven quality, not least Lucas, who was in ruthless mood from the outset to put the Terriers to the sword.
Post-match, Pochettino told the BBC he was "so pleased" that his squad players were able to rise to the occasion, claiming that "football is about the squad, the collective".
The Argentinian manager said: "Of course, we had some injuries after City like Alli and Kane and we were forced to make changes.
"We needed to provide fresh legs and it's good, because we have a tough period ahead and the performance was very professional."
Wanyama, who was delighted to have broken his duck for the term with "a special goal", also hailed his "fantastic" teammate Lucas for "helping the team whenever he gets chances".

Paine delighted with Aussie grit in second Test victory

Paine delighted with Aussie grit in second Test victory

PERTH • Australia captain Tim Paine yesterday praised his emerging team for finding a hard-nosed identity appropriate for their reformed demeanour after a 146-run victory against India in the "bruising" second Test.
Having set the visitors a daunting 287 runs to win on the Perth Stadium pitch, Australia dismissed top-ranked India for 140 midway through the first session on the final day to level the four-match series.
After losing the series opener in Adelaide by 31 runs, the hosts held the upper hand throughout to secure Paine's first win as skipper in his fifth match at the helm.
He told reporters: "Really happy with the competitive, hard style we played. We're slowly building into our style of cricket.
"We stuck to our guns and delivered skill under pressure, and managed to keep ahead in the game."
His side's on-field behaviour was under the microscope in the aftermath of the damaging ball-tampering scandal in March and they have opted for a staid approach since.
In a tension-filled second Test, Paine heatedly clashed with counterpart Virat Kohli on several occasions, conjuring images of previous fiery contests between the teams.
But the wicketkeeper felt Australia had struck the right balance, insisting he was right to "draw a line, and stick up for yourself and teammates".
He said: "We talk about playing on skill and not emotion. We know our best cricket is played when we put emotion aside, (but) we aren't going to sit back and be walked all over."
The 34-year-old also hailed their well-rounded performance, which started with a 112-run opening stand between Marcus Harris and Aaron Finch on the opening morning, laying the platform for a first innings total of 326 - the highest of a low-scoring match.
"As a group, we're relieved, it's been hard work. It's been a bruising test match," Paine added.
"To get a win like that against the No. 1 Test team is going to give us a huge boost of confidence."
The series now shifts to the traditional Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground followed by the finale in Sydney on Jan 3.

CHISINAU (AFP) - Winger Antoine Griezmann scored one and set up another as World Cup winners Frances easily beat Moldova 4-1 in Chisinau in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier on Friday (March 22).
The Atletico Madrid attacker opened the scoring in the 24th minute of the Group H encounter before crossing for Raphael Varane to double the scores three minutes later.
Olivier Giroud equalled David Trezeguet as Les Bleus' third highest scorer of all time with his 34th international goal nine minutes before the break and Kylian Mbappe completed the rout with three minutes left, before Vladimir Ambros claimed a late consolation for Moldova.
Left-back Layvin Kurzawa was the only member of the starting lineup without a World Cup medal as Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman pulled out during the warm up with a muscle issue and was replaced by Blaise Matuidi.
Griezmann had the best of the early chances but his effort from far out failed to threaten Alexei Koselev in the home side's goal after 17 minutes.
The shaggy-haired wide-man scored his 27th goal for France seven minutes later, Manchester United playmaker Paul Pogba picking Griezmann out inside the box with a perfectly timed chip before he hit a lob first time to beat a flat-footed Koselev.
Griezmann then turned provider, his corner finding centre-back Raphael Varane, who headed to double the visitors' advantage at the Zimbru Stadium.

Giroud put to bed when he met late call-up Matuidi's cross a left-footed volley.
Giroud missed an opportunity to move ahead of Trezeguet's record 34 goals shortly after the break, when his header from a Griezmann cross flew past the post.
Pogba could have added a second assist to Griezmann's account but his header was parried away superbly by Koselev on 70 minutes, and the Manchester United man went close again with 11 minutes left when his shot could only find the side-netting.
Kylian Mbappe succeeded where Pogba failed on 87 minutes.
Lemar's challenge on Eugeniu Cebotaru fed the Paris-Saint Germain forward who easily beat keeper Koselev.
The hosts claimed a consolation goal with 90 seconds of normal time remaining when midfielder Ambros capitalised on a rebound off the post to fire past Hugo Lloris.
Next up for France is Iceland on Monday, while as Moldova, who are yet to qualify for an international tournament, head to Turkey.

EPL clubs opposed to European changes

EPL clubs opposed to European changes
LONDON • Premier League clubs have come out fighting in the face of sweeping proposals to change the Champions League format, insisting they will "vigorously defend" the domestic game.
The 20 teams issued a statement after a meeting in London on Friday when they were told of moves by the European Clubs' Association (ECA) to significantly expand the number of European matches, and replace the system where the top four English teams qualify for the Champions League.
The chairmen were told that the threats to the league were two-fold. Firstly, changes to the calendar from 2024 could see the slots available for domestic games cut and those for Europe increased.
Secondly, changing the Champions League to four groups of eight teams, with promotion and relegation rather than teams qualifying from domestic leagues, would negatively impact on the race for the top four, one of the driving forces of fan interest.
The statement read: "All clubs unanimously agreed it is inappropriate for European football bodies to create plans that would alter the structures, calendar and competitiveness of the domestic game and will work together to protect the Premier League."
The extra matches - from six to 14 - would require a radical shake-up of the club calendar. But the clubs have been told that it is a real possibility - the calendar for after 2024 is being determined by the ECA along with Uefa and Fifa.
While legal action is a possibility if the fixture calendar is affected, they also have support from the European Leagues organisation. Lars-Christer Olsson, its president, said: "Our main objective is to safeguard domestic competitions."
THE TIMES, LONDON

However, in a statement published on their official website, the Premier League did not shy away from condemning such changes. They wrote: " The Premier League and our clubs today unanimously reaffirmed our strong opposition to the proposed reform of UEFA club competitions from 2024, which would alter the structure, calendar and competitiveness of league football.
