Football: Even if they come on for just five minutes, I trust the player will give 100 per cent, says Nazri Nasir

SINGAPORE - There is no secret in motivating footballers. Just one simple word - trust.
It captures Nazri Nasir's management philosophy and what he tried to instil during his short stint in charge of Singapore during March's AirMarine Cup in Malaysia.
The former national captain said: "I fully believe in them. I told them when you're selected to be part of this team, it's because I trust you.
"When they're called on in the game, even if it's just five minutes, I trust that they will give their 100 per cent and when they're given a chance, they will do well."
The Lions, their morale low after failing to qualify for the semi-finals of last November's AFF Suzuki Cup, responded with some creditable performances at the friendly quadrangular tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
They beat the hosts 1-0 and held Oman to a 1-1 draw before losing 5-4 on penalties.
Nazri, 48, who was recently appointed assistant to new national coach Tatsuma Yoshida, said: "They responded to me very well and I always try to win the players' trust, that's the most important thing and it showed during the AirMarine Cup.
"I hope they can continue the momentum and that's where I come in also to motivate the players.
"That was a good experience for me to get to know the players better. Now, I can help him (Yoshida) get to know them as well by sharing their mentality, strengths and weaknesses.
"With his coaching ideas and me as I can interact with players easily and understand them better, these will blend together to build a good chemistry in the team."

 
 
 
He and Yoshida face their first test as a partnership in the coming days. The Republic, ranked 160th, face the Solomon Islands (world No. 139) and Myanmar (140) on Saturday (June 8) and next Tuesday (June 11).
The upcoming friendlies at the National Stadium were arranged to help Singapore gain crucial Fifa ranking points for a potentially better draw in July for the World Cup qualifiers.
Singapore captain Hariss Harun said Nazri, who skippered the Lions to victory at the 1998 AFF Championship, is an important presence in the national set-up.
Hariss noted:"His role will be very crucial as the middleman between players and coaches. He also has a lot of experience to impart and with Yoshida's time in Japan with various clubs (Kashiwa Reysol, Albirex Niigata and Ventforet Kofu), we need to adapt as fast as we can.
"Our results at the AirMarine Cup gave us a lot of confidence so we just have to try to continue that momentum. We have a new coach too so the boys are eager to show what we have and I hope this will translate to a good performance in the coming games."
After Nazri retired in 2008, he joined his former club Tampines Rovers as general manager and was later an assistant coach for the now-defunct LionsXII and Young Lions.
He said: "Yoshida brings different ideas and playing styles. He's very detailed and requires high intensity.
"He wants to bring Singapore to a higher level and with his guidance and my local experience, I'm sure we can help the team improve. "

"The procedure was a success and the patient is back in his room," a brief statement from doctors said.
Considered by many the game's finest player and the only man to have won three World Cups, Pele had also been admitted to hospital in France last week after suffering a fever following an event in the city with French World Cup-winner Kylian Mbappe.
He was soon released but his doctors in Brazil decided to admit him again when he returned home on Tuesday.
The 78-year-old former Santos and New York Cosmos player has suffered from kidney and prostate problems and also had hip replacement surgery in recent years.

LONDON • Raheem Sterling might have hogged the limelight with his hat-trick in England's 5-0 thrashing of the Czech Republic in their Euro 2020 qualifying opener on Friday, but much of the hype also revolved around the emergence of talented youngsters.
Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho provided the opener and dazzled with some of his footwork at Wembley, where fellow Under-17 World Cup winner Callum Hudson-Odoi and newly eligible Declan Rice came on for their debuts.
Hudson-Odoi, who came off the bench to break Duncan Edwards' 64-year-old record by becoming the youngest Three Lion at 18 years and 135 days, made a sparkling 20-minute cameo that hinted at a dazzling future.
England manager Gareth Southgate sees nothing wrong in his emphasis on youthful dash and dare.
"We have a smaller pool to pick from, so you've got to think a bit more creatively. You can't wait for 40, 50 league matches, but that doesn't mean that the players aren't of the quality to go in and do well," he said ahead of England's second Group A qualifier in Montenegro today.
"Absolutely we've got competition for places and I think with attacking players, they mature very young and they can go in very young. So it's not an issue to play them."
Southgate has shown time and again that he has no qualms about giving youngsters a chance, yet there is a balance to be struck in terms of getting the best out of them.
Part of his challenge now is making sure these players keep their feet on the ground while their careers soar, and getting the balance right between playing and commercial opportunities while with England.
Citing former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson's handling of Ryan Giggs, the 48-year-old added: "Although they're not our players on a day-to-day basis, I think we've got a responsibility to make sure we get the balance right for the club, but most importantly for the player.
"I always think of Sir Alex with Ryan and how he did that so well. They had sustained success because of that."

TOUGH OPPOSITION
We know we have been there (in Montenegro) twice before and not managed to beat them, so it will be an intense environment, completely different to the challenge (against the Czechs).
GARETH SOUTHGATE, England manage, on the trip to Montenegro for their second Euro 2020 qualifier today.

Southgate will make changes against Montenegro in order to balance "freshness and continuity" as the match in Podgorica comes just 70 hours after the Wembley win over the Czechs.
"I need to have a look at their game (a 1-1 draw away to Bulgaria) to finalise what we expect (from Montenegro)," he said.
"But we know we have been there twice before and not managed to beat them, so it will be an intense environment, completely different to the challenge (against the Czechs).
"It's a good one for us because we have to be able to adapt to these different situations and make sure that we can show our quality in different environments."
Montenegro do not have any sympathy for England despite Eric Dier becoming the seventh member of Southgate's original squad to withdraw through injury after Friday's game, although the home side have problems of their own.

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool legend Tommy Smith, one of the key figures in the club's first golden era, died on Friday (April 12) at the age of 74.
Smith's no-nonsense performances at the heart of Liverpool's defence saw him nicknamed the 'Anfield Iron' during his 18-year spell on Merseyside.
Making 638 appearances for the Reds between 1960 and 1978, Smith won a host of medals as the club rose to prominence both domestically and in Europe.
Under the management of the great Bill Shankly, Smith helped Liverpool dominate for two decades.
Reflecting his tough style of play, Shankly once said of one of his favourite players: "Tommy Smith wasn't born, he was quarried".
Smith, who captained the club for three years, was one of the most influential members of the Liverpool team that won the FA Cup for the first time in 1965.
Twelve years later, with Bob Paisley at the helm, he would head a crucial goal as Liverpool won their maiden European Cup by defeating Borussia Moenchengladbach in the 1977 final in Rome.
In total, Liverpool-born Smith, who grew up in the shadow of Anfield before joining the club he supported as a boy, won the English title four times, the FA Cup twice, the European Cup once and the UEFA Cup twice.
Speaking to Liverpool's official website, Smith's daughter Janette Simpson said: "Dad died very peacefully in his sleep shortly after 4.30pm today.
"He had been growing increasingly frail and suffering from a variety of ailments over the last three months especially. We are obviously all devastated."
Smith left Liverpool for Swansea, managed by his old Reds team-mate John Toshack, in 1978, and helped them to promotion from the old Third Division.
He received the MBE for services to football and retired from playing in 1979.
A brief return to Anfield as youth coach preceded a career as an after-dinner speaker and newspaper columnist.
Smith suffered a heart attack in 2007 before being diagnosed with Alzheimers and dementia in 2014.
Smith's former Liverpool team-mate Phil Thompson told Sky Sports that his fellow defender was an 'icon'.
"I loved him from the Kop, because of his passion, commitment and never-say-die attitude," he said.
"He was an incredible figure who helped me out enormously. Liverpool Football Club owe this guy a debt of gratitude.
"To go on and play with him, rub shoulders with him, go into battles with him, he was iconic. He wanted and desired the points every week.
"Tommy was the epitome of what Bill Shankly demanded. He drove the team, he was incredible."
Former Liverpool player and manager Kenny Dalglish added: "He was a great advert for Liverpool Football Club, the way he conducted himself. His memories will be there forever."
Ray Clemence was one of the Liverpool goalkeepers who benefitted from Smith's defensive excellence.
"So desperately sorry to hear of the passing of Tommy Smith a real legend of the club. Honoured to play with him. Great captain and leader of men thoughts are with family and friends," Clemence said.

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Lionel Messi put Barcelona on the verge of the Champions League final with a devastating double in a 3-0 home win over Liverpool in the first leg of their last-four clash on Wednesday (May 1), taking his goal tally for the Catalans to 600.
The Argentine's milestone goal was a moment of brilliance as he curled a dazzling free kick into the top corner from distance to add gloss to a scoreline that did not reflect the balance of play.
Yet whereas Barcelona took their chances with clinical precision, Liverpool wasted a string of opportunities that fell their way.
Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez reminded the visitors of his superb finishing by opening the scoring in the 26th minute of a tense and finely-balanced first half at the Nou Camp, darting between two Liverpool defenders to divert Jordi Alba's cross into the net.
Barca captain Messi scored the all-important second goal of the night in the 75th minute, chesting the ball down on the rebound and dribbling it over the line after Suarez had hammered the crossbar with a shot with his knee.
The Argentine then added to Barca's already huge advantage to take into next Tuesday's second leg at Anfield by smashing home his sizzling free kick in the 82nd minute.
"Four goals would have been better than three but this is a very good result," Messi told reporters.
"We know that the tie isn't over, Anfield is a very difficult place to go but we're happy with the super game we played tonight. They clearly wanted to score because an away goal means a lot but they didn't and we have a great advantage."

LITTLE MERCY

Liverpool, who were beaten 3-1 in last year's final by Real Madrid, played far better than the scoreline suggested, carving out a number of clear chances but spurning them all.
Barca's South American duo of Suarez and Messi showed little mercy whenever they sniffed out a chance and condemned Juergen Klopp's side to their first defeat in any competition since January with some ruthless finishing.
Klopp praised his side's performance but he was not optimistic about the likelihood of a miraculous turnaround.
"I was completely happy with how we played, we played between the lines, we had chances and caused them a lot of problems," the German told a news conference.
"If you lose away it's not a massive problem as long as you scored a goal but we didn't score that goal and that makes things a lot harder. We have a chance because it's football but we had a much bigger chance before tonight."
Suarez spared little thought for his former employers following his eventful three-and-a-half-year stay on Merseyside, as he celebrated his opening strike with relish, racing behind the goal and wagging his finger at the delighted Barca fans.

GLORIOUS CHANCE

Sadio Mane squandered a glorious chance to level for the Premier League side later in the first half but scooped the ball over the bar, while James Milner and Mohamed Salah were both denied by Barca's excellent Marc-Andre ter Stegen later on.
Klopp's side had done an impressive job of shackling Barca's all-time top scorer Messi, but there was little they could do when the Argentine pounced on the loose ball after Suarez had hit the crossbar.
Messi sparked further celebrations at a packed Nou Camp with another outstanding free kick, yet the drama in this blockbuster European encounter was far from over.
Liverpool again went agonisingly close to snatching an away goal as Barca's Ivan Rakitic scrambled the ball off the goalline only to find the feet of Salah, who somehow smashed the rebound against the near post.
Barca could have seized an even bigger advantage in the tie with two golden chances as Liverpool tired that fell to substitute Ousmane Dembele, but the Frenchman missed the target the first time then shot straight into the hands of goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Football: Brighton slip to humiliating defeat at home to Bournemouth

BRIGHTON, England (REUTERS) -A humiliating 5-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday (April 13) left Brighton & Hove Albion embroiled in a Premier League relegation battle.
Having won just twice all year in the Premier League, Brighton have been dragged into the scrap at the bottom and they fell behind to Dan Gosling's 33rd-minute strike - his first league goal of the season.
Ryan Fraser's fine finish after a swift Bournemouth counter attack 10 minutes into the second half doubled the visitors' advantage.
Brighton's miserable afternoon continued as Anthony Knockaert was given a straight red card for a nasty lunge in the 68th minute.
There was no way back for Brighton after that, with goals from David Brooks, Callum Wilson and Junior Stanislas making sure of a first win in four league games for Bournemouth.
The home defeat means Brighton remain five points clear of Cardiff in 18th, having played a game less, with the pair meeting on Tuesday in a crucial relegation battle, while Bournemouth moved on to 41 points and are all but safe.
"There were some strong words said in the changing room like there should be," Brighton defender Dale Stephens said. "We just need to make sure it was just a one-off."
Brighton came into the contest having lost three of their last five Premier League home games and they never looked like rectifying that poor run.
Josh King went close early on before Gosling opened his Premier League account for the season after being picked out by King.
Following the break, the floodgates opened after Fraser's fine finish from 18 yards, before Knockaert's needless lunge ensured Brighton saw out the final 22 minutes with 10 men.
Brighton left the pitch to a chorus of boos, while Bournemouth's players celebrated a result that should preserve their top flight status.
"It feels like we've been stuck on 38 points forever," Fraser said.
"We were lacking a bit of confidence recently but hopefully we can grow from today's game and now we can try and beat Bournemouth's highest ever Premier League points tally."

SINGAPORE - Tampines Rovers could seal passage to the Asean zone semi-finals of the AFC Cup with a win over Yangon United at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday (May 1), but Stags head coach Kadir Yahaya has warned his charges to be wary of their Myanmarese opponents.
Tampines lead Group F with 10 points, three ahead of Vietnam's Ha Noi FC. Cambodian side Nagaworld and Yangon have three points apiece, but Nagaworld are third ahead of Yangon because of a better head-to-head record. Each team have played four matches.
Yangon are all but out of the running for a place for the knock-off stages - they will not win Group F and are unlikely to finish as the best second-placed team among the three Asean groups - which makes them a threat, according to Kadir.
At the pre-game media conference at the Corpthorne King's Hotel on Tuesday, the former Singapore international said: "They have nothing to lose, and so the danger we are facing is that they are playing with no objective.
"They can attack at will, and for us it is important to remain calm, and keep our shape and composure."
The caution that Kadir is showing comes after his team left it till late before beating Nagaworld 4-2 in their last AFC Cup game on April 17. The Stags were expected to rout the visitors, but were held at 1-1 until the dying minutes.
"We expected their (Nagaworld's) fast counter attacks, and there were some lapses in concentration on our part which resulted in them equalising (to make it 1-1)," said Kadir, who added that his team's experienced stars like Khairul Amri and Daniel Bennett would be key against Yangon.
"Credit to the players, they kept fighting and eventually we got the goals and result we wanted."
Tampines are hoping for some respite in the AFC Cup after a poor run in the Singapore Premier League (SPL), where they are winless in their last four games .
Kadir believes that squad rotation - essential when competing in the AFC Cup - affects the team's consistency, and pointed to how Home United also suffered domestically during their run to the Asean zone crown in 2018, and how the Protectors posted stronger results in the SPL after the group stage of the AFC Cup.
Home won just two of their first seven SPL games last term, but then won 10 of their next 17 matches to finish second.
Yangon coach Myo Min Tun said he is expecting a tough night for his charges, especially with first-choice goalkeeper Kyaw Zin Htet (illness) and Guinean striker Sekou Sylla (suspension) out for the game.
"Tampines have many good and skilful individual players, like the two wingers (Ryutaro Megumi and Jordan Webb)," noted the 35-year-old, who scored for Myanmar against Singapore in the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup.
"Tomorrow will be very difficult for us, but we will do our best to challenge and show our level and our team's playing style."
