Spurs blasted for lacking hunger, mental strength
LONDON • Mauricio Pochettino was damning in his assessment of his Tottenham players after they lost 2-1 at Southampton, accusing them of "complacency" and "arrogance" before suggesting that they do not have the mental strength required to win major honours.
Spurs looked on course for victory, having taken the lead through Harry Kane's 26th-minute goal and they were utterly dominant against their relegation-threatened opponents on Saturday.
But then came a quite incredible turnaround after the break as the Saints recorded their first home victory over Spurs since returning to the Premier League in 2012.
Yan Valery equalised before James Ward-Prowse scored the winner nine minutes from time as Spurs threw away their advantage.
Spurs were incredibly poor after the interval, especially in defence, and their manager, who was forced to watch from the directors' box, having been hit with a two-game ban for improper conduct, was not sparing in his criticism.
"It is so difficult to understand the way we played the second half," said Pochettino. "We showed a lack of hunger that you need to kill the game and, if you want to be a contender, to fight for things, you cannot play like this.
"We started to take some risks that were unnecessary and that was the main problem. It gave them belief and they started to build their game.
"When you lose the momentum after 45 minutes, that is about mentality, that is about being strong and keeping it right."
Spurs have three defeats and a draw from their past four league games, a curious run given their fine Champions League last-16 victory over Borussia Dortmund and one that puts their hopes of finishing third in jeopardy.
Admitting that it would be a "massive challenge" for Spurs to stay ahead of their top-four rivals, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all within striking distance, Pochettino added: "We are fighting against big sides.
"People talk about perceptions, but we need to realise if you do not fight with intensity for the Champions League, you will struggle.
"We had a big gap, welcome to the reality, we are under pressure to win games."

Tipped by many to struggle in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) this season, Fandi Ahmad's charges pulled off a massive upset last week when they beat a Hougang United team boasting several senior national players 2-1.
The young guns, lying seventh in the nine-team table, are hoping to build on the victory when they take on sixth-placed and SPL pre-season title hopefuls Home United on Saturday (April 6) at the Bishan Stadium.
Striker Saifullah Akbar, who scored the winning goal against Hougang, said he and many of his teammates benefited from a three-week overseas stint with the national Under-22 team, also coached by Fandi.
Fifteen Young Lions players were among the 24-strong U-22 squad that went on a two-week training camp in Shizuoka, Japan, before playing qualification matches in Mongolia for next year's AFC Under-23 Championship.
Singapore failed to progress to next year's finals after finishing second in their group. They had drawn 1-1 with Hong Kong and North Korea and beaten Mongolia 3-1.
Saifullah, 20, said: "In Japan and Mongolia, we played against opponents who were physically, tactically and technically stronger.

"Doing well on both trips gave us the belief we could match the top SPL teams when we returned here. And that has been key - belief."
Young Lions skipper Joshua Pereira added: "In Japan, we had double training sessions every day, and did not have outside distractions we have back in Singapore like school, work or National Service.
"The win against Hougang felt exceptional, but we know we have to keep our feet on the ground and try to do it again in our next game against Home."
Fandi, 56, refused to get carried away by the win over Hougang - in pre-season, he had simply targeted avoiding the wooden spoon - but added that he was pleased with the competition among his players.
He said: "Everyone wants a place in the team, and everyone's fighting for it.
"The SEA Games (in the Philippines from Nov 30-Dec 11) is the next big target and the players are all eager to prove themselves."
Despite his team's fine form, Fandi said they will start today's match as the underdogs.
Home have kept three straight clean sheets and also defeated Laotian champions Lao Toyota 1-0 in the AFC Cup on Tuesday.
But Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki is fretting over his attack.

LONDON • The alarm bells shrilled for Manchester City. Almost out of nowhere, they had lost three Premier League games out of four and, with Liverpool flicking on the after-burners, it is no exaggeration to say that another reverse would have imperilled their title defence.
Pep Guardiola and his players could feel a bit better after this. City imposed their front-foot football and, although they wobbled at times during the first half, they had too much for Ralph Hasenhuttl's rebooted Southampton.
The victory cut Liverpool's lead at the top of the table to seven points, ahead of Thursday's seismic clash between the clubs at the Etihad Stadium. Win that and City would be back in business.
They will have to tighten up on the finer details to do so. Defensively, there were flaws before the interval and it is doubtful whether Liverpool will afford them as many chances as Southampton did.
Nevertheless, the positives far outweighed the negatives, after first-half goals from David Silva and Sergio Aguero, either side of a James Ward-Prowse own goal, gave them an unassailable cushion.
Southampton were second best and their frustrations were summed up by the dreadful Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg challenge on Fernandinho in the 85th minute that saw the home captain receive a straight red card.
Hojbjerg, who had earlier scored the Saints' equaliser, was high and out of control with a scissors-style tackle. Guardiola was incensed and he immediately withdrew Fernandinho, who had made an impressive comeback from a thigh injury.
The City manager had mentioned confidence - or the sudden lack of it - after the Boxing Day defeat at Leicester and what would have pleased him the most was how it returned. The early goal from David Silva certainly helped and it came when Southampton left great spaces down their left-hand side.
City might have been further in front before they were pegged back during an entertaining first half.
Raheem Sterling had outmuscled Jack Stephens only to be denied by Alex McCarthy while the Southampton goalkeeper blocked from Aguero at point-blank range following Sterling's low cross.
Southampton were level shortly after Ederson had kept out Charlie Austin's flick header from a corner with a diving one-handed save.
Oleksandr Zinchenko was the City villain, gifting possession to Hojbjerg, and it was an excellent finish from him. He drove into the area, shifted the ball smartly onto his right foot and sent his shot rising inside the near corner.
Southampton had their tails up and they shouted loudly for a penalty when Ward-Prowse took a raking crossfield ball and had the run on Zinchenko inside the area. There was a little contact and down he went but it did not feel sufficient for the penalty to be awarded.
City scored almost immediately and it was another hard-luck story for Ward-Prowse. Sterling darted into space inside the area and, when he crossed, the ball deflected wickedly off Ward-Prowse and flew inside the near corner.
City took a 3-1 lead into the interval when Zinchenko crossed and Jan Bednarek lost Aguero whose header squirmed underneath McCarthy. The one-two punch deflated Southampton and City eased to the win. Bring on Liverpool.
At Turf Moor, goals from Chris Wood (15th) and Dwight McNeil (34th) gave relegation-threatened Burnley a crucial 2-0 win over West Ham.

"I hate it when my team play bad. Winning or losing I want to play well. But winning is the important thing. Winning 4-3 and scoring three in the last 10 minutes is good for the team and the fans."
Defender Angelo Ogbonna had given the home side hope with a header from Aaron Cresswell's corner after Huddersfield scored three goals in a league match for the first time this season through Karlan Grant's double and a Juninho Bacuna strike.

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United revealed on Thursday (Feb 14) that sacking Jose Mourinho cost the club nearly £20 million (S$34.8 million), with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward hailing the impact of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The sum of £19.6 million which is listed under "exceptional items" in the club's second-quarter results, includes payouts for the members of Mourinho's staff who left with him after he was sacked in December.
The fortunes of the Premier League club have been transformed since Solskjaer took the helm as interim boss.
United are now in the top four after being 11 points adrift of the Champions League places when Mourinho left.
"The appointment of Ole and Mike (Phelan) as caretaker manager and assistant manager has had a positive impact throughout the club," said Woodward.
"We are delighted with the improvement in the team's performances since December and we look forward to a strong finish to the 18-19 season."
In the report, the club announced record revenues of £208.6 million for the quarter, which translate into earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of £104.3 million and an operating profit of £44 million.

He earned the necessary certification to lead a professional local club six years ago. But the opportunity never came for Khidhir Khamis, until now.
The 33-year-old will take the reins of Balestier Khalsa for the upcoming Singapore Premier League (SPL) season, after Tigers coach Marko Kraljevic left two weeks ago to coach Malaysia Premier League side Kelantan.
This makes him the youngest Singaporean head coach appointment in the 24 years of the SPL and its predecessor, the S-League which started in 1996.
Five-time champions Tampines Rovers had announced in December that they intended to appoint Gavin Lee, 28, as head coach once he gains his 'A' licence, which he will attempt to earn this year. Until then, he cannot hold the title.
The youngest local before Khidhir was Shasi Kumar, who was a year older when he led Woodlands Wellington in 2010.
Khidhir, who previously coached age-group teams at Tanjong Pagar United and Geylang International - where he also had a stint as head of their youth programme - until 2013, is relishing the opportunity to return to elite football coaching.
He had applied for several posts but "the doors just did not open", said the Victoria School alumnus, who had been coaching at schools and private academies.
He is now relishing starting on "something new and exciting" with Balestier.
Khidhir received his Asian Football Confederation 'A' Licence - which is mandatory for locals to take charge of SPL clubs - in 2013 at the age of 27. At the time, he was said to be the youngest Asean coach to hold the standard.
Balestier chairman S. Thavaneson said that eight candidates had applied for the role, half of whom were foreigners. But he had no qualms picking a local rookie to replace Kraljevic, who had been the Tigers' coach since 2014, and led the club to a first Singapore Cup that year before being named the S-League's Coach of the Year.
"Our local coaches, I think, have over the years stepped up and been able to hold their own in the SPL," said Thavaneson, who is also one of four vice-presidents in the Football Association of Singapore.
"I think more young local coaches will make the grade, provided they are given that opportunity.
"We, the management of local clubs, must have that... trust in local coaches and help them develop. Because helping them develop helps develop Singapore football too."
Khidhir knows his age will raise eyebrows. After all, he is only a year older than Balestier's oldest player, goalkeeper and captain Zaiful Nizam.
"It's about how you manage the players," said Khidhir, with a cool smile. "I've made it clear that... (they should) not cross the line between player and coach, even though we are about the same age.
"And I think they are professional enough to manage and handle themselves in that sense."
Khidhir, who visited the famed French training centre Clairefontaine at his own expense in 2013, plans to leverage on technology for a "more visual" approach to transferring knowledge to players. He is also exploring the feasibility of filming training sessions.
With "nothing to lose" in his first major coaching stint, he is keen to build on the work Kraljevic had done - Balestier finished sixth in the nine-team SPL last season - and try get the Tigers playing a more expansive game, although he was not ready to make any predictions yet.
Borrowing Nelson Mandela's famous quote, Khidhir said: "As far as I see it, we'll go into matches and we're either going to win, or learn."
