Football: Real Madrid, Atletico close in on Barcelona

MADRID (AFP) - Karim Benzema shot Real Madrid to within two points of La Liga leaders Barcelona with the winner in a scrappy 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, while countryman Antoine Griezmann fired a brace in a 3-2 win over Real Valladolid to take Atletico Madrid level with Barca.
Benzema's 13th-minute strike was enough for Real to move up to third on 29 points, two behind Barca, who travel to Levante on Sunday evening (Dec 16), and second-placed Atleti. Sevilla have the chance to move back above Real and level with the leading pair when they host mid-table Girona early on Sunday.
However, they were made to sweat for the three points by plucky Rayo, who are second-from-bottom but would have snatched a point in stoppage time had Sergio Ramos not cleared the second of Thibaut Courtois' double saves, from Alex Alegria and Emiliano Velazquez, off the line.
Little was seen from Real stars like Luka Modric, who was presented with his Ballon d'Or ahead of the match at the Santiago Bernabeu, and fans showed their displeasure at the end of an uninspiring contest.
Earlier, Griezmann struck the winner for Diego Simeone's Atleti 10 minutes from the end after Valladolid had fought back from a two goal half-time deficit.
The Frenchman had played a key role in building the early lead. The World Cup winner laid on Nikola Kalinic's second goal of the season in the 26th minute with a superb through ball, then put his side two up on the stroke of half-time.
After Kiko Olivas handled Griezmann's long-range shot, and referee Undiano Mallenco pointed to the spot after a video review, the Frenchman slotted home a neat penalty .
The hosts came roaring back in the second half, twice forcing fine saves from Jan Oblak before Fernando Calero scored for the hosts from a 56th-minute corner.
Saul Niguez then inadvertently pushed Enes Unal's header into his own net nine minutes later, and Valladolid pushed for victory.
However Griezmann stole the three points in a frantic finale, cooly steering home the winner after a scramble in the box following a corner.

LONDON • Chelsea fear it may be a parting gift, but should today's Europa League final be Eden Hazard's last game for the Premier League club, the Belgium forward is determined to go out on a high.
After seven "amazing" seasons at Stamford Bridge, he is expected to move to Real Madrid this summer after running down his contract into its final year.
While a deal has yet to be announced with his long-term suitors, Hazard has shown no interest in extending his contract beyond 2020 and has already told the club where his future lies.
However, Chelsea's position is complicated by a Fifa ban on signing players for the next two transfer windows.
Sell now and as things stand, pending an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, they will be unable to recruit a replacement.
Holding on to him for a further 12 months, though, runs the risk of a player who can leave for nothing next summer rather than for a reported £100 million ($174.5 million) fee.
Having always pledged to depart with a trophy, victory against Arsenal in Baku, Azerbaijan would provide the perfect send-off.
The 28-year-old, who also ruled out playing for another English club, said: "It is a European competition so for me, for the club, for the manager, for the fans, it is something important.
"When you play a final, it does not matter whether it is the Champions League, Europa League or League Cup - you just want to win.
"If it is my last game, I hope to bring (home) the trophy. My first trophy at Chelsea was the (2013) Europa League, so it would be a nice last trophy."
Blues manager Maurizio Sarri, who himself could be headed for pastures new, has also admitted the club "need to be ready if (Hazard) wants something different".
While Hazard, who has also won two Premier League titles, a League Cup and the FA Cup with Chelsea, suggested he would speak about his future only when an agreement has been struck, that could come soon after the Belgian said "after the final, we will see what happens".
He added: "At the moment, nothing has happened, so I can't say anything. It's in the hands of the clubs. But I can put it aside. I have done it during a full season right now and I have played reasonably well. So I stay in that mode, just thinking about football.
"If we go to Baku with a strong approach to the game, we can do something good there."
In his way of a final hurrah stand Arsenal, who like the Blues, are determined to end what has been a topsy-turvy season with silverware.
But unlike Chelsea, Unai Emery's men missed out on Champions League qualification via a top-four finish in the Premier League.
The Arsenal manager knows that with a victory, his players will fulfil "two objectives - to go to the Champions League and after, to play with the titles".
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, the Spaniard said: "I want to do something important here, for example to play for this title. We deserved to be here, we feel to do something here.
"Above all is to enjoy and play with all our good spirit.
"We're playing for our supporters whether they're here or not."

LONDON • Burton Albion will need a "miracle" to overcome the might of English Premier League champions Manchester City over two legs in the League Cup semi-finals, said manager Nigel Clough.
The son of legendary manager Brian Clough, who led Nottingham Forest to two European Cups triumphs in 1979 and 1980, is also no stranger to producing Cup upsets.
Clough was in his first spell in charge when Burton, then in English football's fifth tier, held a Manchester United side boasting Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney 0-0 in the FA Cup in 2006.
Burton have since progressed to the third tier and are lying ninth in League One, but Clough believes stopping Pep Guardiola's City, particularly when they travel to the Etihad today, is an even tougher task.
"I think this one over two legs," said Clough, when asked to compare which was the tougher challenge.
"When Rooney and Ronaldo came on after 59 minutes here for Manchester United, it's a similar sort of prospect with the likes of the quality that Manchester City have.
"But, away from home, it's a different thing. When they are on their own patch, as you saw against Liverpool (City won 2-1), they're as good and as confident as anything."

DAVID VERSUS GOLIATH

Clough also masterminded Sheffield United's run to the last four of both the League and FA Cups when in League One in two seasons at Bramall Lane between 2013 and 2015.
However, in eliminating Championship sides Aston Villa, Forest and Middlesbrough and Premier League strugglers Burnley, Burton have not yet faced any team of City's calibre.
"We've not gone into any detail with them (the players) because that will frighten the life out of them," admitted Clough.
"They know. They watch Match of the Day every week. They know exactly how good they are.
"To reach the League Cup semi-final, in some ways the job is done.
"But we still have an outside chance of achieving a miracle, and that's what we'll try for."
City, meanwhile, are still in the hunt for four competitions.
After closing the gap on Liverpool to four points at the top of the Premier League, they thrashed Rotherham 7-0 on Sunday in the third round of the FA Cup.
Guardiola's men will also face Schalke in the last 16 of the Champions League next month.
"We do what we have to do to become a great, great club," said the Spaniard.
"The great clubs don't choose competitions, don't choose games, you have to do your job.
"I would like to have two months' holiday right now, definitely - this month is really tough, but it is what it is.
"We want to become a top club and you cannot deny any game, we cannot drop any competition. We are going to play the next game like a final."

LONDON • The third act of Manchester City and Tottenham's trilogy has some living up to do, after a Champions League classic in midweek saw Spurs prevail on 4-4 on away goals to reach the semi-finals.
Pep Guardiola believes today's Premier League match at the Etihad "will be just as intense as the other day".
However, at his pre-match press conference yesterday, he admitted the heartbreaking manner of their exit - City thought they had progressed to the last four for the second time in club history only for Raheem Sterling's added-time goal to be ruled out by the video assistant referee - still stung.
The Spaniard said: "If you believe it doesn't hurt, you're wrong, but we have to live with that. The players were fantastic. We lost, but I was so proud. The performance we did was incredible.
"It's just life, it's football. Important is how you behave, football, life isn't easy, you have to fight and compete it's how we react.
"We have to accept these sort of situations, but looking behind won't help us move forward. These kind of players have an opportunity to show they can do that.

GOING FOR GOALS
Both teams will attack. We are going to attack, it won't be easy because they are an incredible top team, but we will try.

"They will get back what they deserve. One day, maybe we will be in the same position, and maybe we will be more fortunate or precise or whatever to go through. We did everything in both games."
While City are still hurting after seeing their quadruple dream - a feat yet to be achieved by an English club - die at the hands of Spurs, Guardiola is fully aware his side have to refocus if they are to become the first side in a decade to retain the Premier League title.
With leaders Liverpool playing Cardiff only tomorrow, a victory will re-establish a two-point lead at the top and the 48-year-old wants his players to "compete with that feeling (of disappointment) against Spurs".
He added: "I don't want the players to forget, it will take time... it is what it is, I like to see them work hard. Try to play our game.
"I hope for our best, we have five games in the league and the FA Cup (final), so we will see. What Liverpool can do against the other teams I am not involved, I can't control."
Although City were rapped on Wednesday for being too cavalier in defence, with Aymeric Laporte enduring arguably his worst game for the club, Guardiola will not be changing his front-foot approach, nor is he expecting Spurs to sit back.
He said: "Both teams will attack. We are going to attack, it won't be easy because they are an incredible top team, but we will try."
But his players will be wary of being too gung-ho against Mauricio Pochettino's men, as forwards Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura have the ability to hurt any sloppiness - just like the other night.
And Danny Mills has made it clear to his former club that if they do not win, "the title is gone for them".
The pundit told talkSport: "This is another huge game. To raise yourself again, it's not going to be easy. The emotions would have been so, so draining... they could end up with one trophy and is that failure? It's such a fine line City tread."

The German told the club website: "Daniel has earned the right to be considered a modern-day Liverpool great, I would think.
"He came to the club while we were trying to rebuild and re-establish ourselves. Some of the goals he has scored for Liverpool were so, so, so important.
"Alberto is a person whose personality is reflected in how he plays, full of life, full of energy, always positive, an unbelievable character who is always willing to give all of himself for the team.
"We will miss them of course, but we can say farewell with the best words possible, guys, you leave as European champions."
Liverpool claimed their sixth European Cup after they beat Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid last Saturday, and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has yet to come down from his "massive high".
Admitting it had been "a great season to look back on", the 20-year-old, who had a record-breaking 12 assists, the most by a defender in the Premier League, told Sky Sports: "Apart from a few niggles, I cannot pick out a bad moment.
"We're up there with one of the best teams in the world now and we've got respect from every big club in Europe.
"It's a dream come true and it's something that you always want to do. You don't expect to be in these situations and you never know if you will be again, so for now, I'm trying to soak it up.
"To have a major trophy under the belt now is massive.
"Hopefully, we'll be able to push on for the club and get some more."
